Overview

The first half of the first season of the television series The Untouchables, starring Robert Stack, has arrived on DVD with no bonus features per se -- except for the presence of the original two-part pilot aired on Desilu Playhouse, which was directed by Phil Karlson and is worth half the retail price of the set, just by itself. The pilot is here in its feature film edition as The Scarface Mob, with the introductions by Desi Arnaz and Walter Winchell (on camera) added on to the front end for the sake of completeness (Winchell would later be the off-camera narrator for the series). The source materials for the pilot (directed by Phil Karlson) and the subsequent series seem to have been preserved beautifully and transferred (full screen, 1.33-to-1) even better -- this is some of the best black-and-white television of its period, rivalling the best releases of The Twilight Zone. The sound is just as good, which gives good play to Nelson Riddle's theme music (which is absent from the pilot). Each disc opens to an easy-to-use menu that allows for individual episode access as well as the selection of individual shows -- the chaptering matches the commercial breaks for each episode.
