Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Few shows in television’s vast pantheon have examined issues of class as adeptly as Britain’s Upstairs Downstairs. Set during World War I, the nine-time Emmy Award-winning series follows the travails of the aristocratic Bellamy family and their servant staff, who cohabit the opulent 165 Eaton Place. The fourth season covers a broad spectrum of storylines and plot twists, as the family confronts rising anti-German feelings, holds a tea party for wounded officers, and endures the tragic effects of the war. This four-disc set collects all 13 episodes from the show’s fourth season, considered by many to be its finest. Whether you’re a devoted fan or a first-timer, the compelling entourage at Eaton Place is sure to have you aching for more Upstairs Downstairs.
  • "A Patriotic Offering" - World War I has broken out, and everything is changing for the Bellamy family as they anxiously await news of James, who is away at war.
  • "News From the Front" - James Bellamy, on leave from battle, is drawn into a discussion of the war and how the Army is desperately in need of guns and ammunition.
  • "The Beastly Hun" - The sinking of the Lusitania arouses anti-German sentiment and causes the Bellamy servants to consider their own feelings when a local man is found to be of German origin.
  • "Women Shall Not Weep" - Edward and Daisy plan to marry while Edward is on leave. Georgina resolves to train as a nurse. Ruby surprises everybody with her announcement that she’s leaving Eaton Place to make munitions.
  • "Tug of War" - James is on leave and frustrated with his staff job in the army. Hazel, understanding his longing to rejoin his regiment, intervenes.
  • "Home Fires" - Lady Prudence and Hazel argue over a tea party for wounded officers. Rose has an unexpected reunion with an Australian farmer whom she nearly married before the war
  • "If You Were the Only Girl in the World" - At the tea party for wounded officers, Hazel is attracted to a young soldier, and they spend the remainder of his leave together.
  • "The Glorious Dead" - The tragedy of war strikes at 165 Eaton Place, as the servants comfort a grieving Rose, whose fiancé has been killed in battle. Hazel confronts her own fears for her young airman.
  • "Another Year" -Edward, on leave, returns to Eaton Place. Hazel learns that she has no prospect of seeing James in the near future.
  • "The Hero’s Farewell" - Lady Prudence's charity matinee is disrupted when a bomb hits Eaton Place.
  • "Missing, Believed Killed" - A soldier returns from France with James's personal effects and tells how he and James were separated during the battle when the enemy overran their lines.
  • "Facing Fearful Odds" - Hazel has befriended a young, attractive widow. Then Richard learns that the widow’s young son is soon to be court-martialed.
  • "Peace Out of Pain" - The Bellamy household is at home again as the war comes to a close. Richard proposes to Virginia, with whom he has fallen in love. James is still recovering from his war wounds, and Hazel becomes seriously ill.
