Overview

The first season of the British drama series Upstairs, Downstairs takes place from November 1903 through June 1909, an era popularly known as "Edwardian" in honor of King Edward VII. Fans of the series will notice that the familiar characters are still in the developmental process during the first 13 episodes--especially the Bellamy's cook Mrs. Bridges (Angela Baddeley), who comes off as a nasty virago and a closet boozer! Penned by novelist Fay Weldon, who won a Writers' Guild Award for her efforts, the opening episode "On Trial" (originally filmed in black and white due to budgetary limitations, but reshot in color for syndication) introduces Pauline Collins as the Bellamy household's troublesome new under-housemaid, who after trying to pass herself off as a Frenchwoman named Clemence is revealed to be a cockney named Sarah (or at least she settles on Sarah!). Forced to leave the house in disgrace after an unpleasant incident involving duplicitous manservant Alfred (George Innes), Sarah ends up living in squalor, a plight that touches her former employers Richard and Marjorie Bellamy (David Langton ,Rachel Gurney) to the extent that she is rehired--which proves in later episodes to be major mistake! In other developments, the Bellamys' rebellious daughter Elizabeth (Nicola Pagett) shocks her family by choosing "progressive" poet Lawrence Kirbridge (Ian Ogilvy) as her fiancée, a decision culminating in marriage at season's end. Meanwhile, Elizabeth's irresponsible brother James plunges into the first of several misbegotten liasons, this one with a flashy actress. The season's best and most famous episode is "I Dies from Love," the story of a tragic "downstairs" romance. When the first season of Upstairs, Downstairs was picked up for American play in January of 1974, it was combined with the series' second season, which takes place in the years 1908-1909. Of the 26 combined episodes, only 13 initially aired in the US, allowing PBS to bill the remaining 13 as "the lost episodes" a few decades later!

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Few television shows have examined issues of class as adeptly as Britain's Upstairs Downstairs. Set in the years leading up to and following World War I, the nine-time Emmy Award-winning series follows the travails of the aristocratic Bellamy family and their servant staff, who inhabit the opulent 165 Eaton Place. The series brilliantly captures the spirit of the times, and adeptly portrays the aristocracy's changing view of the war. At first WWI is little more than a nuisance threatening to leave the Bellamys under-staffed, but it soon becomes an all-encompassing endeavor, with both upstairs and downstairs adding to the war effort. This mammoth 24-disc set collects all 68 episodes from the show's critically acclaimed 5-year run, and includes the retrospective "Upstairs Downstairs Remembered: The 25th Anniversary Special." Whether you're a devoted fan or a first-time viewer, the compelling entourage at Eaton Place is sure to have you aching for more Upstairs Downstairs.

Best TV Drama of the Early 70's

Written and produced with impeccable taste, and the winner of an armful of Emmy awards...it seems sad that America has nearly forgotten that it fell in love with UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS when it aired on PBS...Co-creator Jean Marsh heads a cast of stellar British actors in telling the nearly thirty year saga of an English family above and below stairs...If you have not met Rose, Sarah, Mr. Hudson or Mrs. Bridges, you have missed one of the most remarkable shows ever aired on television...this is not to be missed.

    Upstairs Downstairs Magnificent as ever

40 years ago I watched Upstairs Downstairs and finally was able to purchase the series. Yes it has stood the test of time, it is as magnificent as it was 40 years ago. Mr. Hudson the butler, played by the late Gordon Jackson is still the best butler ever and staunch Scottish person. Mrs. Bridges the cook was played beautifully by Angela Baddeley who passed away while the series was running in the United States. Rose the head parlor maid played by Jean Marsh, also one of the series' creator, is still with us and her character is still strong.

Upstairs people are just as strong in their performances: David Langton as
Richard Bellamy; Rachel Gurney as Lady Marjorie Southwold Bellamy; Simon Williams as James Bellamy son and heir; Nicola Pagett as daughter Elizabeth Bellamy the rebel. All have done a wonderful job of bringing the Edwardian era to our shores, along with a little history. The series times period runs from 1901 thru 1930. From King Edward thru the sinking of the Titanic, the First World War and the roaring twenties.

I gave the series to a cousin to watch as she never watched the series and
she is watching it every day and enjoying it. She sees the strength in each character and the actor portraying the part.

If you have never seen this series try it you will like it.

    Thoroughly Engaging...

An excellent, well-acted, well-written, series that keeps you interested in the characters and their fates, while providing an wonderfully entertaining and accurate overview of times in which they live.

    Totally Delightful

This British series was an international hit -- in the US and on the continent -- when it was originally shown and would have the same response if shown again today.

What a wonderful look into the world & society of the early 1900's.

This series is as wonderful now as it was in the '70's! How class distinctions have changed over the course of time. It also seems that many of the issues of rasing children today are not much different from that time period. This is particular to miss Elizabeth & Ms. Georgina.

As the years pass, you get a glimpse of how tragedies such as the Titanic sinking and WWI affect this family & their servants.

This is history & entertainment at it's best.
