Uptown Girls

Overview

Whimsical and sweet, this film made no waves at the box office, but seems far more appropriate for home video, where it should find greater success. As for the DVD, the 1.85:1 picture, which is enhanced for widescreen televisions, is the highlight of the disc. Colors are bright and warm, and detail is exceptional.

The fantastical look of New York envisioned by director Boaz Yakin is nicely realized on this transfer. As would be expected for a recent release, with some minor exceptions, there aren't any distracting elements to be found. The sound doesn't fare quite as well; it's not that it isn't intelligible, but this dialogue-based romantic comedy never takes advantage of the 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack. Some separation can be found, but can just as easily be missed. As with the sound, the added features are good, but nothing exceptional. Two featurettes, "The Lowdown on Uptown," a fluff press kit at best, and "Rockin' Style," a look at costumes with their designer Sarah Edwards, are also included, as are 13 deleted scenes. In addition, a music video for "Time" from Chantal Kreviazuk, a standard photo gallery, and the theatrical trailers for this, Legally Blonde 2, Heartbreakers, and A Guy Thing are included. If this charming little film was missed in the theaters, then this DVD is a perfect way to see it in the comfort of your own home.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
One of several misguided, ill-fitting Brittany Murphy vehicles, Uptown Girls has enough elements in the right place to make you wish it were better. A sort of Cinderella-in-reverse tale see also the execrable Lindsay Lohan-starring Just My Luck, the film has the look and feel of a modern-day Manhattan fable, thanks in large part to ace cinematographer Michael Ballhaus. The quartet of female screenwriters involved in the project have also given the material a hip, slightly satirical fairytale vibe, presenting Murphy as a poor little rich girl who just needs to be shown the light of compassion by a littler poor little rich girl played with a scary intensity by Dakota Fanning. As they bark at each other for the majority of the picture, you cease to care whether or not they're going to break out of their hard, calloused shells; not the best mood to be in while watching a light coming-of-age chick flick.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert
Murphy has a kind of divine ineptitude that moves beyond Marilyn's helplessness into Lucy's dizzy lovability. She is like a magnet for whoops! moments.
Chicago Tribune - Mark Caro
In Uptown Girls Murphy is like a puppy in traffic; you're confident she'll reach the curb but only because the cars are swerving, not because her moves are so deft.

    Learning from two sides.

Dakota Fanning and Britney Murphy make a pretty good pair. Dakota who is the side of being independent at a young age, while Britney Murphy still has the 'girls just wanna have fun' type but both are the same. In the movie, it proves that Britney Murphy is still this type becuse of her friends and having no parents as she grew up. Dakota Fanning, on the other hand is the type that has everything she ever wanted because her mother is simply too busy to care. Something worthwhile to rent at blockbuster. Shows the good sides and comedic sides.

    LACKING

I love Brittany Murphy, I just couldn't stand this movie! It was too light and fluffy, and Brittany looked like she was on crack! Her makeup artist needs to be fired! Dakota Fanning was awsome though!

    Uptown Girls

After viewing Uptown Girls I thought it was a good movie that gave me a few good laughs. I thought it was interesting that 8 year Ray had to teach Molly to act her age. I thought it was interesting for the fact that I have seen this situation in real life. Also I thought the movie had a very good ending and yes I do believe every ending is just the start of a new beginning!

    r.....i.....g.....h.....t.....

After viewing the movie uptown girls, I felt like the movie was good, but I just didnt enjoy the movie. I felt there was not a good enough story and the plot was not existance and the character that was Britney Murphy protrated was just too 'Blonde' & the kid that she baby sat was too young to do that anyway, the movie was alright for a 'chick flick'

    Britney Murphy at best.

Great movie!! Dakota Fanning was super. A must buy. A cute movie for the family with good morals and it really shows how New Yorkers live.
