Overview

A vacationing couple makes a terrifying discovery about the motel room they have just checked into in this thriller scripted by Mark L. Smith and directed by Nimród Antal Kontroll. Their car broken down and their prospects for finding a tow-truck driver at such a late hour slim to none, David Luke Wilson and Amy Fox Kate Beckinsale decide to make the best of their situation by resting out the night at a nearby motel. Left with few choices of entertainment for the evening, the pair soon settles down to enjoy one of the low-budget slasher films sitting atop their motel room VCR. Upon realizing that all of the films seem to have been shot in the very same room they currently occupy, David and Amy suddenly become the stars of a particularly sadistic fright flick. As hidden cameras track their every move, the hapless couple attempt to turn the tables on their would-be killer before they meet the same grim fate as the poor souls being butchered on television. Frank Whaley and Ethan Embry co-star in a thriller that's sure to keep leery travelers sticking to the main highway.

Another Example Of Why Kate Beckinsale Is So Awesome!

Okay, so I just saw this movie last night, and I thought it was pretty darn good. Though I do like Luke Wilson, I am an even bigger fan of Kate Beckinsale. She is one of my favorite actors. Seeing her act in the end of the movie was just awesome! I don't want to say too much about it, for anyone that is reading this and wishes to see it, but this movie had a kick@$$ ending I thought. Not quite as good as Kate's roles in Pearl Harbor and the Underworld movies, but a definite runner up. The whole cast was good. The killers were pretty deranged, so they pretty much got what was coming to them in the end. If you like thriller/suspense/slasher movies, and haven't seen this one before, definitely give it a watch.

    Its trailer caught my attention

I cant really remember what I watched when I saw its trailer but it definitely caught my attention. Im into thriller and scary movies so I thought this is gonna be really good....on the trailer Luke turned on the Tv and they saw themselves on it on that very same room or motel they stayed the night at. so ..thats creepy right??? but the entire movie just evolved on the same spot the motel itself and you can sort of exepect whats gonana happen like chasing and all...but I liked the part where they hugged each other amidst the chasing and the killing attempt..and they looked really scared...you could kind of relate that when bad things happen u realize you dont wanna lose the person you love or that you even realize how much you love the person and you dont wanna die because you still wanna be them....

A Movie That Dares to Examine Snuff Films

VACANCY may not be the best thriller of the year, though it does provide three good performances from Kate Beckinsale, Frank Whaley and a surprise serious role for fine comedian Luke Wilson, but it stands apart from many by the fact that it unveils a piece of the underbelly of crime by addressing the creation of snuff films (films made by strange minds that show the death of the actors, and whether or not we like to believe it, there is an audience for that!). The fact that the film (as shown in the very good featurette additions) was filmed entirely on a studio set adds to the admiration that grows after the fright diminishes. And writer Mark L. Smith and director Nimród Antal deserve credit for their project. The plot is simple: on a night road married couple Amy (Kate Beckinsale) and David Fox (Luke Wilson) are lost and the tension of the night only ads to the fact that this couple is in the throes of a broken marriage, one that fractured at the accidental death of their only son. Frustrated and angry with each other and their plight, they end up stranded in the middle of nowhere and check in to a morbid motel managed by the oily and repulsive Mason (Frank Whaley). From the moment they enter their room they realize something is wrong: the videos on the television are snuff films filmed in the room in which they are staying. From there the action of the film speeds up and is a non-stop ingenious attempt to escape the killers that besiege their room. The trauma of the night makes Amy and David reconsider their history and the film ends with a grande guignol bang. Beckinsale and Wilson make a credible couple and the writer and director have opted to make the film more about the relationship of the estranged couple than just about horror. It works. This is not a great film, but it is an entertaining one - as well as frighteningly informative...! Grady Harp

EDGE OF YOUR SEAT THRILLER !!!

This movie is so scary I watched it twice. It seems like it could happen to any couple whose car has broken down. Very creepy. I highly recommend it.

    Tense and well-written

This movie was worth watching. The dialogue between the two main characters is well-written and the actors are excellent. The story is kind of predictable, but that does not take away from the tension that is created. A simple little movie that performed well above expectations.

    Another Interesting Thriller

You have travelers, an old motel, and being stalked by crazed killers while being videotaped. This was a good suspense thriller with creepy jump out moments. And a pretty good performance by Luke Wilson who's mostly in comedies but shows he can act in a serious movie and Kate Beckinsale is no stranger to horror she was also in both Underworld movies. Sort of reminded me of Saw in a scene or two and even scream.
