Tom Cruise stars in director Cameron Crowe's complex thriller Vanilla Sky. Presented in a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Paramount's work on this picture is stunningly good. With dark black levels and solid colors, this transfer includes nary a hint of edge enhancement, grain, or any other imperfection that might otherwise mar the image. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English, as well as Dolby 2.0 Surround in English and French. The 5.1 mix is very aggressive and full, utilizing rear and front surrounds generously (especially with the use of modern rock songs in the background). Also included on this disc are English subtitles. The extra features for Vanilla Sky are plentiful and exciting, starting with a commentary track by Crowe and his wife, composer Nancy Wilson of the rock group Heart. Both participants are very chatty and even get a chance to do a brief interview with Cruise. Two featurettes, "Prelude to a Dream" and "Hitting It Hard," each include interviews with the cast and crew as well as some extensive behind-the-scenes footage from the film and the overseas premiere. Finally, there is also a brief interview with Paul McCartney, a music video by Leftfield and Afrika Bambaataa, an unreleased teaser trailer, a theatrical trailer, and a photo gallery with an introduction by photographer Neal Preston.
There is wonderful chemistry of two quite different kinds between Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz on the one hand, and Cruise and Penelope Cruz on the other.

I think this movie is good, but it shouldn't be so dark.
Tom Cruse is brilliantly over chopped in a wonderflly formated movie. Cruise suspends over a relationship turned frantickly insanely obsessive, and a true love... Its easy for the son of a large corporate business to make friends when he drives around in a 1968 ford cobra SHHHH elby. Pay close attention to the smaller things in order to fully enjoy this flick. Exciting, fast , enlightening, and I think, one oof the year's best.
Vanila Sky has the best trio ensomble of the year, with Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise. After David (Cruise) falls madly in love with Sophia (Cruz), he breaks up with popular-type girl Julie (Diaz). But that's not gonna end like that. Julie drives herself off a cliff and killes herself and scarng David. But that it...? Cameron Diaz got a Golden Globe nomination for her role. This is the perect movie about obesion with a lover.
this was not the best movie i've seen it was way to confusing and why didn't he get the girl!?
Ever doze off in the middle of some meeting and you dream you're fallling? Your mind tells you you're falling, but in reality, your head is slipping off your hand or you're leaning to one side as you sleep. This is a mix of the body and mind taking in information, trying to discern what is happening as you sleep. This movie does the same by evoking the brightest and darkest parts of a man's psyche that eventually lead to a spiritual awakening. Kick a$$ flick.
This is not a quick or easy movie to digest. I didn¿t see the theatrical release, missed reading or hearing all the reviews, and had no idea what the movie was about. I rented the DVD when it became available because I like Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz. I thought, as I¿m sure many people did that had seen the advertisements or heard pre-release buzz, that the film was a murder mystery, conspiracy theory, or something similar. I expected a Hollywood movie. In other words, pablum. I would be entertained, I wouldn¿t have to think as everything unfolded quickly before my eyes, and the bad guys would be punished as the good guys triumphed. The one thing I didn¿t expect was a sci-fi plot. I spent the first hour wondering why the film seemed slow, desultory, and unclear ¿ it wasn¿t meeting my expectations and I questioned how much I liked it. The bar scenes and those immediately following outside in the street were unsettling. The characters struggled to recapture the easy and fluid interactions they once enjoyed, but instead, everything was now strained, difficult, and ¿disfigured¿, making the timing of David Ames¿ (Tom Cruise) ¿splice¿ understandable. The ending explains much. It¿s sad, yet also filled with opportunity; a chance to live life differently the second time around. The movie evokes a questioning of what is real, what endures, and an awareness that it¿s the small things that are important. I watched it twice, and enjoyed it much more once I understood what was going on. The director¿s commentary (on DVD) is helpful, but is a little longer and filled with more rambling than I would have liked. This is a rich movie for those that like to think. There is much here to ponder and discuss, but perhaps that can wait and I¿ll tell you in another life, when we are both cats¿.
I have seen this movie twice and I think it is an excellent choice. I won't even attempt to explain the complexness of this film. It's got an amazing story line, a great cast, and is very twisted throughout. It makes your brain work to try to figure it out. All in all, it's a great movie that I highly recommend seeing.
this film is one of the best, for lack of a better word, choreographed films I have ever seen in my life. This film is so beautifully poetic that I feel pity for the individuals who say things like ''how come he didn't get the girl''. Vanilla Sky is meant to be your imagination. . . . . think. . . love
This is a great movie for those of you who have a practice lucid dreaming...true if you know nothing on LD it is confusing...and for those who ask why he didn't get the girl at the end...if you use your imagination and listen carefully....i believe he did...just listen to the voice at the end when he is being woke up once more...it was her....and the fact that they said they would meet in another life time...tadaaa!!!
This film was way too confusing and I did not feel that watching it again was a good use of my time. I am reasonably intelligent but this was over the top. Director's commentary just convinced me some people in Hollywood take themselves way too seriously.
this is defenetly a one of a kind. such an amazing movie, who makes you think about it, and about it's idea for a long time after you've finished watching it. it is a briliant movie, and faces one of the most fasinating subjects in our lifes- the sub-consious. highly recomended, and realy is an excelent movie.
If you like cookie cutter predictable movies this one is not for you. Otherwise, enjoy the ride.
I had a headache after watching this movie, u should not have to watch a movie 3 times just to understand what is going on. I would not reccommend it to anyone. I'm not to happy with Tom Cruise's choice of roles anymore, it was just as bad as Eyes Wide Shut.
Vanilla Sky rocks! Tom Cruise is still one of the hottest guys in Hollywood!!!! But that¿s not the only reason why I liked this movie¿ The way Monet¿s painting was integrated into the theme was so bada$$! The ending was amazing too ¿ a bit ambiguous, but I think they ultimately ended up together, as it should be. I could watch this movie over and over again¿
Almost unimaginably bad. I love Rush and watched it on his recommendation. Perhaps he was still deaf when he watched this and temporarily afflicted with blindness as well. Truly a gawdawful movie. Bizzare story which is to movies what modern art is to art. Made absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Do not watch this movie if you are just in the mood to veg out for the evening. But if you want something a' la Memento which will make you think as you watch, this is definetly the film to see. There is new stuff to notice every time. Just remember: there are no ''final'' answers or interpretations to this film - you have to find those inside yourself.
This movie ''messes'' with your brain - makes you THINK. (What a concept!!) Sadly, being made to think is not for most moviegoers. No kidding, afterwards while making love to my wife, I wondered briefly for a fraction of a second if she might suddenly morph into someone else. Loved Benny the Dog. Wonderful imagery.
This movie started out slow but picked up in the relationship aspects in the beginning of the movie. It even added a lot of heat where it was needed. When the first twist (of which there were many) occurred, it was discomforting and very confusing. Still, I stayed with it, as once again the relationships among the characters again Intrigued me. By the time the ending came, I was frustrated beyond reason and the ending didn't make my comfort level with this film any more palatable.
In all truth this movie is one of the best movies I have ever seen. My mind was spinning the whole time because there is not one minute in which the movie did not touch my personal life as I know it will touch yours. It had everything except violence which is more than what a movie needs. Excellent!
Loved this movie the first time I saw it, like it more with each successive viewing. This is a movie that grabs hold of you, pulls you down dark alleys and makes you face things you usually do not think about. If you are in the mood for the typical Hollywood pablum (such as American Pie or anything with Meg Ryan) don't bother with Vanilla Sky - you just won't get it.
I rated this movie one star because you can't rate it any less than that. It was the stupidest movie I've ever seen. To this day, I don't get what the point of the movie was. I understood what happened at the end, but through the entire movie it kept losing me. I hear it's one of those movies you have to see more than once to understand, but I couldn't bring myself to watch it again.
