Overview

Julianne Moore stars in the dramatic 1994 film Vanya on 42nd Street. The movie is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and sports many imperfections along the way. While there are a fair amount of crisp colors and sharp black levels, overall the image retains a softness to it that is often distracting. With a heavy amount of halo in the picture as well as some speckles of dirt and grain, this transfer of Vanya on 42nd Street should have been given more detailed attention than what ended up on this disc. The soundtrack is presented in a lackluster Dolby Digital 2.0 mix in English. There are hardly any directional effects or surround sounds to be found on this track -- aside of clear dialogue, effects and music, this sound mix is only mediocre. Also included on this disc are optional English and Spanish subtitles. Sadly, hardly any extra features have been included on this edition of the film -- all that's featured on this disc in the way of supplements are theatrical trailers for the films The House of Mirth, Lost in Yonkers, and The Spanish Prisoner.

All Movie Guide
A clever and powerful interpretation of the Anton Chekhov play Uncle Vanya, Vanya on 42nd Street reunites director Louis Malle with Wallace Shawn and André Gregory, his collaborators from 1981's My Dinner With André. Like that film, Vanya is a self-reflexive examination of the thin line between an actor's performances and his or her own life; the success of both films relies on Malle's ability to convincingly blur that distinction. Essentially a filmed rehearsal, Vanya's spare production design -- no costumes, no set, just an empty, rundown theater -- gives it tremendous resonance. Without a uniformly excellent cast, the film might have come off as merely conceptual; thankfully, Malle is aided by Shawn, surprisingly effective in the play's (and the film's) title role, and the emotive Julianne Moore as Yelena. Brooke Smith's heartbreaking performance as the ignored Sonya, however, really steals the film.
