Hayley Mills earned a special Academy Award for her disarming performance as Pollyanna (1960), a recently orphaned girl whose indefatigably optimistic spirit transforms the life of a small town at the turn of the 20th century. Everyone cries at the end of Old Yeller (1957), but the tears are earned honestly in this quintessential boy-and-his-dog adventure based on Fred Gipson's coming-of-age novel. Set in 1860s Texas, the film stars Tommy Kirk as Travis, a 15-year-old left in charge of the homestead while his father (Fess Parker of Davy Crockett fame) is away on a cattle drive. Into Travis's life strays Yeller, the "best doggone dog in the West," who becomes a faithful friend and family protector. Swiss Family Robinson (1960) is the original Survivor, with John Mills, Dorothy McGuire, James MacArthur, Tommy Kirk, and Kevin Corcoran as the shipwrecked Robinsons, who make a new life for themselves as the sole human occupants of an island swarming with animal life, and are menaced by pirates. The Parent Trap (1961) doubles your pleasure with Hayley Mills in a mischievous dual role as twin sisters, separated at birth, who team up to bring their estranged parents (Brian Keith and Maureen O'Hara) back together. These films continue to enchant viewers young and old, and they are as vital to Disney's enduring legacy as its animated features. Also available separately, they are all enhanced with archival goodies and delightful audio commentary with cast and crew members.
