Veronica Guerin plays as a fascinating study of obsession, one that eventually leads to the ultimate sacrifice, and the DVD from Touchstone captures the intelligence of the film nicely. The 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer is quite good, though maybe short of excellent. Colors, especially the prevalent use of reds, often stand out; the conscious use of a specific palette is immediately noticeable. Overall detail is generally strong, but at times does show signs of weakness. Not as impressive, but still well produced, are both 5.1 English Dolby Digital and DTS tracks. Surrounds are used sparingly, and the main focus of the audio is up front, which is not unexpected for this type of dramatic feature. Fortunately, English subtitles are also accessible, as the Irish dialect can be difficult to understand at times. While not extensive, the extra features are certainly noteworthy. Two commentaries, one from director Joel Schumacher and the other with screenwriters Mary Agnes Donoghue and Carol Doyle cover nearly everything associated with the film. And while not particular lengthy or involving, a press-kit style featurette entitled "Public Mask, Private Fears" does add some additional details, with cast and crew interviews. An interesting addition involves the real and the reel: two segments, one a deleted scene of Guerin accepting an award from the C.P.J. (the Committee to Protect Journalists), and the other, the actual award ceremony with the real Veronica Guerin. The differences, and especially the similarities, are fascinating to point out. Finally, two segments feature producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In the first, speaking over shots of the movie, he answers questions about the production in a commentary/interview style, and in the other, he offers a commentary to accompany the photographs he often takes on location. This is a solid disc all around, from picture to supplements, and a worthwhile way to find out about an important figure of recent history.

Chalk up another triumph for Cate Blanchett, who's absolutely sensational as a plucky Dublin reporter single-handedly taking on the Irish Mafia in the mid-'90s. Since this film first hit theater screens, it has been noted that the real-life Veronica Guerin wasn't nearly as charming as her cinematic counterpart, and that many historical details were embellished or fabricated outright to make more compelling entertainment. Nonetheless, in broad outline the story is true to the facts: Guerin exposed drug-peddling mobsters in Dublin and paid a terrible price for her activism. Blanchett plays the reporter as a nimble-minded, fast-talking, indefatigable newshound who seems to value a journalistic scoop far more than her long-suffering family. Dependable character actor Ciarian Hinds shines as the gangster who doubles as Guerin's informant, and Gerard McSorley contributes a truly blood-chilling turn as the explosive crime lord who vows to exact revenge on the reporter for her interference. Though seemingly out of his element in Dublin's mean streets, director Joel Schumacher skillfully replicates the seedy settings in which most the story unfolds, and he coaxes fine performances from all the supporting players. But he also gives Blanchett plenty of room, which pays off with a dynamic star turn that in coming years will surely rank among this talented performer's very best.

    I remember...

    ...when the news broke, despite being a lad in America. This is a very moving and accurate account.

    Cate Blanchett does Veronica Guerin more than justice

    I've viewed this film 4 times since its release & have found it to be one of the most moving films of this new century. I wish the American release of the film had been greater. The people of this country need to see this film in light of the war on drugs. It's tragic that Ms. Guerin lost her life, but it's also compelling to all of us to take up the torch & courage against the evils of this world. Ms. Blanchett deserves an Oscar for her portrayal of Ms. Guerin. She is by far one of the outstanding actors of our time. I hope to see more films from her of this magnitude.

    a powerful movie

    I saw this movie when it was released in Dublin. As an American viewing this movie and talking to people who new her, seeing the streets she worked on. It was overwhelming. I am disappointed that it did not have a bigger release in America. Cate Blanchet gives one of the finest Oscar winning performances. I recommend it to everyone. It is very intense and scary at times. I would not let anyone under 15 watch it.

    down to earth

    as a former hard core pat, I lived the live so I know this showing is truthfull, and revealing, the only thing lacking, was indephed showing, I live in Amerika now, but the old days are still fresh in my mind, and this showing really rekindalled that, my hat off to yous!
