Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Critically acclaimed but barely watched by viewers, the UPN series Veronica Mars was a tough sell in the beginning: a teenage girl, who dealt with the everyday horrors of high school yet was also a private eye. Fans didn't catch on at first, but that was also the case with the teenage girl named Buffy who was a vampire slayer. And like Buffy, Veronica Mars features whip-smart writing, sassy, funny dialogue, and enough plot twists and turns to keep viewers guessing. The perfectly cast Kristen Bell plays Veronica, daughter of recently ousted Neptune, California, sheriff Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni), who is now a private investigator after allegedly botching the investigation into the murder of Veronica's best friend, Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried). As a result of the incident, Veronica is on the outs with her fellow "09ers," the privileged kids at Neptune High: they include Lilly's brother, Duncan (Teddy Dunn), who used to be Veronica's boyfriend, and Logan Echolls (the fantastic Jason Dohring), Duncan's best friend and Lilly's boyfriend before her murder. Veronica does have a few friends that come to her rescue: Wallace Fennel (Percy Daggs III) becomes her new best bud at school after she saves him from Eli "Weevil" Navarro (Francis Capra), the school hoodlum, who has a soft spot for Veronica. There are two major mysteries that encompass the entire first season -- who killed Lilly, and who raped an unconscious Veronica during an 09er party the year before. Characters like Lilly and Duncan's parents, Jake (Kyle Secor) and Celeste Kane (Lisa Thornhill), are at the top of the suspect list, along with Kane security officer Clarence Wiedman (Christopher B. Duncan), Veronica's mother, Lianne (Corinne Bohrer), and even new sheriff Don Lamb (Michael Muhney). The investigation into Lilly's murder progresses in each episode, sometimes with such intelligent subtlety that viewers may need to watch the whole season again to catch nuances in the acting and the scripts. Those who abhor cliff-hangers will welcome resolutions to both plots -- we find out who raped Veronica in the second-to-last episode, "A Trip to the Dentist," and in the season finale, "Leave It to Beaver," we discover exactly who killed Lilly, in a moment so jaw-dropping we can almost guarantee you'll want to watch it twice.
Entertainment Weekly - Joss Whedon
Season 1 works as mystery, comedy, and romantic drama, often simultaneously. But what elevates it is that in a TV-scape creepily obsessed with crime-solving, VM actually asks why. It knows we need our dose of solution as a panacea against the uncontrollable chaos of life's real mysteries. And it shows, feelingly, that having the answers is never enough.

Rob Thomas is a genius! The characters are rich and multi-dimensional and are brought to life by an outstanding, talented cast who clearly know how to deliver the cleverly-written script. Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring are particularly compelling, making Veronica a heroine of strength and intelligence and Logan the consummate TV bad boy with a true and loyal heart.

thought the later seasons are not as gripping, this is an amazing show that everyone should watch

Excellent series. I happen to be channel surfing and stopped to check out "Veronica Mars". After the third show I was hooked. I noticed that there is only three seasons; is there any plans on producing a season four?

I LOVE THIS SHOW! I could spend hours talking about this show, but I don't have that time right now. Let me just tell you that it is so worth the money! The cast is just brilliant. Every girl should have some of Veronica Mars in her. She's strong and smart.

This show is so clever, funny, original, and all around cool. The writing and acting are both excellent and I am so happy that it will continue for another season. Go out and watch it!

The V/D sences that you complain about do exist, but are not as bad as you say they are. It is a compelling show, and blood was needed to express the love and anger. I can not wait for the next season. I hope Eli has more lines and is a bigger part of Veronica Mars's life.

I started watching this show one night cause I was bored and then I got hooked on it. After one or two shows my brother got hooked too. It is just a really good show and you should definately spend teh money on it! by the way does anybody know if it is coming back for a second season or is it over??

I Love this show, its NEVER boring and the cast is lively and engaging. Veronica is a sassy and determined good "guy" out for the truth about the death of her best friend, and she helps many others along the way. It's so nice to see a "Teen" portrayed in a positive light.
