Victory at Sea began life as a 26-episode television documentary, originally presented on NBC in 1952-1953 as part of their Project 20 series. The program used rare film clips -- including captured German and Japanese combat and newsreel footage -- to chart the history of WWII, from the outbreak of hostilities in 1939 to VJ (Victory in Japan) Day in 1945. Richard Rodgers composed a special score for the series, which quickly matriculated into a hit LP; one of Rodgers' leitmotifs was later adapted into "No Other Love" in the Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway musical Me and Juliet. Victory at Sea won several awards and ran forever in rerun syndication -- and, in 1954, was spun off into a theatrical feature. It was up to editor Isaac Kleinerman to distill the 13 hours of the orginal series (culled from 60 million feet of film!) into 97 minutes. The feature version of Victory at Sea was narrated by Alexander Scourby, replacing the TV version's Leonard Graves.

    abominable audio

    Footage is the same as the VHS series available a few years ago. Audio on the VHS series is great. Can't think what the producers of this DVD set were thinking of. Returned for refund, kept the VHS version.

    Good Early TV Documentary, Abominable Audio

    I saw the original in TV in 1953, and this series is exactly as good as it was then with one horrible exception. I agree with the Jan 21 Reviewer that the audio is terrible. It is poor on the first DVD, and gets progressively worse as one proceeds through the set. It's obvious the low volume narration was intentional because when the narration ends and the score resumes, the narration that overlaps the score increases in volume with the music. I can't imagine why the producers did this, but it is very aggravating.

    very bad audio

    The sound is terrible. It is not possible to hear the narration when the level is set for the music score. With the level set for the narration, the music track is too loud for the music-only passages. The narration is thin and reedy, as if was fed through a telephone line. I have this series on laser disc. The audio on them is fine. I am returning the DVD for a refund.

    dissappointing documentary

    a potpouri of unrelated photographic scenes to fill the long titled items.A very poor documentary compared to the TV History Channel presentations.Several years ago we saw Victory At Sea on tv which was of high quality and the musical rendition was the beautifull melody 'No Other Love' as the background musical theme.

    Understand the Struggle and Victory of WWII

    Having seen the original series on TV in the 50's this DVD set is wonderful. You are there through every phase and step. All the strength and tenacity of the USA and its alies are depicted. A must have and must see for anyone who wants to learn about WWII

    PERHAPS THE BEST DOCUMENTARY SERIES ON WW2 EVER PRODUCED

    PRODUCED IN THE EARLY 50;S, VICTORY AT SEA HAS AGED LIKE GOOD WINE OVER THE YEARS. METICULOUSLY MARRIED TO RICHARD RODGERS MUSICAL SCORE, THE SERIES PLAYS OUT BEFORE OLDER EYES BETTER THAN WHEN IT AIRED SO LONG AGO. SHOULD BE REQUIRED VIEWING FOR THAT GENERATION WHO BELIEVES LIFE IN AMERICA IS FREE AND A BIRTHRIGHT COSTING NOTHING.
