Overview

After a little bit of confusion in the announcements, Irwin Allen's first (and most successful) science fiction series, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, has arrived on DVD in a very handsome three-disc package covering the first half of the series' first season, which originally aired on ABC in 1964-1965. The series had previously been available on laserdisc from Japan during the early '90s, and in videocassette from Columbia House, but this marks its most ambitious home-viewing release to date. The film-to-video transfers are superb, with good, healthy contrasts and loud, full audio. With Winton Hoch doing the photography, the show was getting feature-film quality on the shooting end, and it all comes out on playback here, in fine detail to the full-frame (1.33:1) image -- and with each episode getting a dozen chapters, the material is treated like a feature film. Each two-sided disc opens to a multi-layered menu that's very easy to maneuver around, and the last side included as a bonus features the color version of the unaired pilot episode (which also appears in its black-and-white version, in order with the rest of the series). Although the series' first season was broadcast in black-and-white, Allen shot the pilot in color in order to better match footage from the color 1961 feature film Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and that color version was accidentally put into syndication in the 1970s in one city, eventually making it onto the cable-television package of the program on the Sci-Fi Channel; still, it's good to have it here in a crisp digital video transfer. There's a selection of silent Irwin Allen home movies taken on the set during the production of the pilot episode that are valuable for showing the producer/director at work. In addition, there is an ABC-produced promotional reel in color, hosted by Allen -- and intended for sponsors -- that reveals the producers as a bit of a cheat, at least in trying to attract sponsors, because the reel is in color, and uses footage from Allen's earlier Voyage feature film, as well as his version of The Lost World and Five Weeks in a Balloon, and the producer all-but-claims that Jill St. John and Red Buttons (then a major star) will be guests on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. There's also a really neat collection of still-frame material including storyboards and artist conceptions of the material from the pilot episode, and special-effects shots of the submarine models used in the series, showing how L.B. Abbott and company did some of their work. The material at hand looks and sounds so good, and there are so many extras, that even more casual fans may have to get this box, which offers a lot of entertainment value. The series in its first year was loaded with good guest stars, including a few actors more closely associated at the time with feature films, such as Eddie Albert, Nick Adams, and Henry Silva.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Producer Irwin Allen, the "Master of Disaster," spun off this popular ABC series from his 1961 movie of the same title, continuing the adventures of a modern-day Captain Nemo and his technologically advanced atomic submarine. Although it's best remembered as a science fiction show, Voyage initially concentrated on suspenseful episodes inspired by the Cold War -- enemy agents of unnamed countries flitted in and out of the first season, sometimes disguised as scientists working on some project aboard the sub. Richard Basehart starred as retired admiral Harriman Nelson, inventor of the submarine Seaview, a one-of-a-kind craft with extraordinary capabilities. In the pilot episode, "Eleven Days to Zero," Nelson learns that an impending tidal wave of biblical proportions threatens to wipe out a good portion of the civilized world. He gambles that a nuclear explosion, set off in exactly the right place, will disperse the gathering waters and nullify the threat. Enemy agents attempt to foil his plan, counting on worldwide chaos in the wave's wake to secure control of vital resources. When Nelson's first skipper is killed, U.S. Navy captain Lee Crane (David Hedison) takes command of the Seaview and helps rout the villains. Following this impressive opening episode, the series presents a series of adventures designed to show off the sub's capabilities and the resourcefulness of its crew. "The Fear Makers," another exceptional episode, finds an enemy agent releasing a fear-producing gas in the Seaview's ventilation system, causing panic among the crew when the sub goes below on a dangerous mission. Overt science fiction elements first become pronounced in "The Sky Is Falling," in which the Seaview comes across an alien spaceship that has crashed into the ocean floor. And "Turn Back the Clock" shows Nelson and Crane exploring an uncharted island on which evolution has been reversed and dinosaurs still roam. Although they seem a little naïve today (and not altogether convincing in terms of applied science), the first-season episodes of Voyage retain an undeniable charm that makes them quite appealing.
