Overview

The unrated version of the Vulgar DVD contains commentary by the principal cast and crew, including Kevin Smith. The rated version does not include this audio track, which is too bad because this film benefits from illumination. There also are six deleted scenes, introduced by the filmmakers as they are filmed sitting at the microphones they used to make the aforementioned commentary. Also included is a stills gallery, an anamorphic transfer with Dolby 5.0 sound, and the trailer. The surprise bonus is a 38-minute documentary called "Judge Not: In the Defense of Dogma," which confronts the controversy over Smith's film, Dogma.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Whatever demons were lurking inside writer/director Bryan Johnson's head, here's hoping they've been purged. This is one bleak, dark, obsessive . . . um, comedy. To call it a comedy suggests there may be laughs in it; the only laughter Vulgar generates are the kind of involuntary chortles you expel from the back of your throat when you see something that affects your lower digestive system. Which is not to say this extremely low budget production -- some of the scenes seem to be illuminated by flashlight -- isn't without its moments of merit. In fact, it has "cult favorite" written all over it as an audience that seeks out uncomfortable movies like this discovers it and clings to it. Brian O'Halloran somehow manages to shape a sympathetic character out of his Flappy/Vulgar mess, but it's Jerry Lewkowitz who deserves some sort of an award as Ed/Edwina, the singularly disturbed hayseed serial rapist who shares his victims with his grown sons, with a video camera running. Some of this is extremely rough going, and there isn't much of an ending, but if you like your dramas raw, you can't get much rawer than Vulgar. The title is perfect.
