Overview

The second volume of W.C. Fields movies from Universal fills in the glaring hole -- Nevr Give A Sucker An Even Break -- left by its preecessor and supplements it on the same disc with a vintage documentary, an hour-long tribute to Fields by comics Johnny Wayne and Frank Schuster, who mostly utilize clips from his various movies (most of which are on this or the other volume), most of which will be familiar to longtime fans. The collection contains some of Fields' most interesting, if not his very best movies -- the seldom seen You're Telling Me and the better known The Man On the Flying Trapeze, The Old Fashioned Way, Poppy and Never Give A Sucker An Even Break. These are well transferred (full-screen, of course -- 1.33-to-1) and chaptered with reasonable generosity, and the sound is clean if not set at an especially high volume. One heartily wishes that Never Give A Sucker An Even Break would have gotten a commentary track, as it's so bizarre a movie that one would love to see how a scholar would deal with it -- but there are no such bonus features here. Still, the material is so funny and so well done that it's still a bargain and well worth the expense, which will be self-evident to anyone who's ever laughed at Fields' movies.

My husband has been sick & home bound for the past 2 yeaes, now on the mend he is increasinly anxious & depressed with all the bad news on tv....I bought this collection of WC Fields thinking this would bring some laughter back into our home.....The movies are silly, non sensible & yes, dumb...but they sure can make you laugh! WC Fields is BRILLIANT. His silliness is infectious & even if you don't think he is funny, you find yourself bent over in laughter...This is better than any doctor for what ails you!
