Overview

The popular BBC sitcom Waiting for God originally ran for five series, between 1990 and 1994. The program takes place in the Bayview Retirement Village, an appalling rest home for the elderly characterized by horrendous food, obnoxious staff members who insist on treating the residents like helpless children, and an institutional crackdown on any attempts to show individuality. Conflicts perpetually arise from the refusal of two ornery residents, Tom (Graham Crowden) and Diana (Stephanie Cole) to accept the indignities handed to them or the conformity that Bayview administrators (especially the manager, Harvey) feebly attempt to enforce. This shared attitude between Diana and Tom naturally spells a tighter bond between them, and episodes depict their hilarious misadventures together. This package from the BBC features the entire series as it originally aired, including all the episodes and the 1992 and 1993 Christmas specials. As an added bonus, it also packs in cast biographies and Funny Women, a featurette starring Stephanie Cole.

Not just what my grandmother calls "that Brit version of 'Golden Girls,'" this series is smart, sharp, and side-splittingly hysterical. Diana is not only a great character, she's completely believable. Who doesn't know a feisty, complainy old lady that you want to throttle one second and have a pint with the next? And Tom is the perfect doddering foil for Diana's acerbic nature. Give "Waiting for God" a shot. It's so, so worth it.
