Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Living Color

Overview

This Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Living Color two-disc set includes all of the Mickey Mouse short films spanning 1935 to 1938, totaling in at 26 animated shorts. Each of these shorts is presented in 1.33:1 full-frame. While there are a few blemishes, including some grain and dirt, overall these shorts look excellent considering they are around 65 years old. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 and, much like the video, looks very good for its age. There is a lack of true fidelity and depth in ...

There is a lack of true fidelity and depth in these shorts (as well as a few pops and scratches), though the bulk of the soundtrack sounds crisp and clear of any excessive distortion. Also included on these discs are English subtitles. In the way of supplemental materials, this set includes some real gems. To start off, there is an introduction by Disney fan, historian, and critic Leonard Maltin, indulging us with some insight into Mickey Mouse's place in cinematic history. Some "pencil tests" feature original rough versions of a few shorts before they went into the ink and paint shop. "Parade of Award Nominees" is a short that was created for the Academy Awards a few years back. On disc two there is a still galley filled with rough drafts, poster art, and other production materials. Rounding off disc two is a featurette titled "Mickey in Living Color" hosted again by film critic Leonard Maltin. This featurette only runs about nine minutes long and while filled with a lot of information on the shorts, it ends up being all too brief. Finally, there is an eight-page booklet inside this set, and the whole thing comes packaged in a handsome-looking tin container. This set is an absolute must for hardcore fans of Mickey Mouse.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Like the similar "Walt Disney Treasures" collection of "Silly Symphonies," this two-disc set is an indispensable animation library that contains every color Mickey Mouse cartoon that played in theaters between 1935 and 1938. Several, including "Thru the Mirror" and "The Brave Little Tailor," capture the indomitable Mickey at his cheerful and plucky best. In the vintage "The Band Concert," "Moving Day," and "Mickey's Trailer" -- each a riotous parade of slapstick genius -- animation's mightiest mouse allows himself to be upstaged by scene-stealing costars Donald Duck and Goofy. Another treat is "Mickey's Polo Team," which features caricatures of such silver-screen legends as Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, and Shirley Temple. Animation buffs will thrill to the archival extras, including pencil test versions of three full-length cartoons, "Mickey's Fire Brigade," "On Ice," and "Pluto's Judgement Day," as well as Mickey's first appearance in color in "The Parade of the Award Nominees," a 1932 animated short produced for the Academy Awards. These cartoons are vivid illustrations of why Mickey towered over the other anthropomorphic rodents of his day and helped build one of the culture's dominant and enduring media empires.
