Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Nearly 75 years after Pluto's screen debut, Disney throws him a bone with this collection of 28 vintage cartoons from his 1930-47 period. Pluto remains a triumph of personality animation and a breed apart from Disney's menagerie of classic cartoon characters. Unlike the anthropomorphic Mickey, Donald, and Goofy, Pluto was the quintessential canine. He did not speak, but thanks to the genius of the animators, viewers always knew what he was thinking. This collection contains his less-than-auspicious debut in the black-and-white ‘30 cartoon "Chain Gang," a dual role in which he portrays twin bloodhounds on the trail of prison escapee Mickey. Pluto would later be cast as Mickey's faithful pet. While the mouse got top billing early in his career, lovable Pluto emerged as a star in his own right, stealing scenes from Mickey, Donald, and Goofy in such cartoons as "On Ice." "Lend a Paw," in which Pluto rescues and then reluctantly befriends a kitten, earned him an Academy Award. This set also sensitively isolates, under the banner "From the Vault," two cartoons that some might find racially insensitive. In "Pantry Pirate," Pluto stages a raid on the kitchen under the eye of an exaggerated Mammy character, and in "A Gentleman's Gentleman," Pluto emerges from a mud puddle in blackface. As in the collection Mickey Mouse in Black and White, Volume 2, host Leonard Maltin advises parents to discuss these cartoons with their children as an example of how far society has come. This fetching collection also includes a profile of Disney's top-dog animator, Norm Ferguson, a segment that chronicles Pluto's career, and an excerpt from "A Story of Dogs," originally broadcast on the Disneyland TV series. Dog lovers, Pluto fans, and animation buffs will likely sit up and beg for a Vol. 2 after this tasty treat.
