Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Jonathan Dixon
The sepia-toned opening credits and bittersweet mountain airs of its theme song introduced television audiences to The Waltons in 1972, delivering a portrait of Depression-era Americana that earned 18 Emmy awards over a nine-year run. Set in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the series depicts the daily struggles, successes, and occasional tragedies of three generations of the Walton family, all narrated through the astute eyes of the Walton’s oldest son, aspiring writer John-Boy (Richard Thomas). John-Boy’s retelling of life on Walton's Mountain shapes each episode into a virtual short story about grandparents Zeb (Will Geer) and Esther (Ellen Corby); parents John (Ralph Waite) and Olivia (Michael Learned, who won three Emmys over the course of the series); and siblings Jason, Mary Ellen, Ben, Erin, Jim-Bob, and Elizabeth. John-Boy reminiscences about the family's rural life throughout the series, and how those traditions occasionally clashed with the dizzying events of a new century. Highlights from this first season on Walton's Mountain include "The Star," in which Zeb sees a crashed meteorite as a bad omen; the Emmy Award-winning episode "The Scholar," wherein John-Boy teaches a neighbor how to read and write; and "The Ceremony," in which the arrival of Jewish refugees introduces the Waltons to religious differences. Season 1 of The Waltons also includes guest appearances by a very young John Ritter, a pre-Carrie Sissy Spacek, and Ned Beatty, several months after his career-breaking role in Deliverance.

This DVD is a great buy! We enjoy watching the stories over and over again because the family's adventures are inspiring and uplifting. The Waltons' expressions of love and concern for one another are heart-warming. We hope that they release the next four seaons, too; in particular, we want them to release the 'Best Christmas' episode for this year's Christmas season.

I bought this because I remember this from when I was young, and I am fed up with the garbage they offer for children on TV. There are great values taught in these episodes, while being obvious to adults, the kids enjoy it and my daughter is 12. It stimulates many discussions with them, while teaching them what the depression was like.

If you are a true Waltons fan, this DVD set of the first season is well worth the money. DVD makes it much easier to store episodes, but also lends itself to much clearer viewing. The stories, of course, are priceless! I hope they bring out the next season on DVD too.
