Overview

Rival groups of boys from two neighboring Irish villages engage in a running battle in this remake of the 1962 French movie of the same name, based on a novel by Louis Pergaud. The boys from Ballydowse, who dress as they please, exchange insults with boys from nearby Carricksdowse -- who wear school uniforms. One day, the Bally gang cuts the buttons off the clothes of a bully in the Carricks gang. The Carricks retaliate by swiping the buttons from the clothes of the leader of the Bally boys, Fergus (Gregg Fitzgerald). The Ballys deface the Carricksdowse church, though both groups are Catholics. They rout the Carricks by charging at them naked. Marie (Eveanna Ryan), who heads the Ballys' girls auxiliary, tries to calm down the boys by raining new buttons on them to replace those lost in warfare. When Fergus' abusive stepfather (Jim Bartley) finds out about the war, he beats Fergus and sends him away. Fergus goes to the cliffs along the valley between the two villages, chased by the Carricks' leader, Geronimo (John Coffey). Geronimo, who has come to help, slips, and Fergus rescues him from a fall. In the end, Fergus, riding a horse, leads his troops, dressed in motley medieval suits, into a final battle. The allegorical anti-war film is primarily aimed at children. ~ Michael Betzold

I remember Siskel and Ebert reviewing this movie and telling the audience to see it. They both agreed it was a great movie. It is one of my all time favorites. It's so endearing, a wonderful children and teen movie with an innocence you don't see in movies anymore. It has the same kind of innocence as the movie "Breaking Away".

Whoah! This movie is wonderful!!! I first saw it several years ago, and fell in love with John Coffey. He is a great actor! Now I own the film and can't get enough of it. It is great! I hope to see more of these fine looking actors in the future.

I remember seeing this movie on a Sunday around 1996. Let's see, I was a 6th grader...and, not to be obnoxiously redundant, I fancy John Coffey (Geranimo) and Gerard Kearney (Big Connor). This movie is absolutely amazing, but at times I wish it wasn't so obscure. Perhaps I can find a copy of the French novel is was based on and give it a whirl as well. If you haven't seen this movie, you haven't lived.

Too bad Yves Robert's original noir-et-blanc film from 1962 is not available on DVD. Wonderful story by Pergaud has lost a bit of its French touch with Irish setting, but nonetheless is worth seeing and good incentive for reading even better book.

The War of the Buttons is the best movie ever! The Irish boys have no rules even if it comes to popping buttons off eachothers' clothing! It is fun to watch and has excellent morals. Fergus is hot!

I am so obsessed with this movie! Gregg Fitzgerald (Fergus) and John Coffey (Geranimo) are so gorgeus. It's such a good movie, even for Americans. See it, it's soo good.

You can't get better than this ! A great movie for children to adults and is a real comedy. It's not fair ! Why does everyone have to fancy Geronimo ! He's mine, ya hear !

The War of the Buttons, a wonderful movie set in Ireland raised my spirits with its cheery tunes and clever morals. In my opinion, John Coffey, who played Geronomo in this delightful movie, was the best, classey, yet intemidating, John showed a Geronomo that I could never even hope to see again, (plus he's really hot.) I give this movie as many thumbs up as there are actors.

I absolutely love this movie. I use to think Geronimo was the cutest boy ever! I believe that this is worth seeing for anyone. Does anyone know where any pictures of John Coffey are available?

This movie is wonderful. This has to be one of the top 5 children's movies ever. Even adults will enjoy as it never is condescending towards children.
