Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
A sprawling, 14-hour wartime saga written by historian Herman Wouk, War and Remembrance picks up where the 1983 miniseries The Winds of War left off. The story begins one week after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, as the Henry family is being drawn into World War II along with the rest of America. Victor "Pug" Henry (Robert Mitchum), a naval officer, is forced to contend simultaneously with the perils of war, a crumbling marriage, and a burgeoning love affair with the daughter of a prominent British news reporter (Victoria Tennant). War and Remembrance's focal point, however, is the story of Victor's niece Natalie (Jane Seymour), an American Jew trapped in Europe with her uncle (John Gielgud) as the horror of the Holocaust dawns on the world. Both actors earned Emmy nominations for their performances: Gielgud is as commanding as ever, and Seymour offers a tender, heartbreaking turn. This six-disc set includes interviews with Wouk and various cast members; the featurette "War and Remembrance: A Living History"; and a making-of documentary. One of the most ambitious productions in network history, an epic in every sense of the word, War and Remembrance will be a welcome addition to every video library, whether one recalls it from its original 1988 airing or is seeing it for the first time.
Chicago Sun-Times
Impossible to ignore...the most ambitious, challenging, detailed production ever.
