Overview

D. Boon, guitarist with the California punk band the Minutemen, once said "punk is whatever we made it to be," and Tim Irwin's documentary about the group's short but wildly influential career is an inspiring look at how three guys from the decidedly non-hip town of San Pedro, CA, embraced the freedom and possibilities of punk and ran with it, taking themselves and their art farther than anyone had a right to expect. Plexifilm's DVD release of We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen only amplifies what was memorable about Irwin's film and is an essential purchase for anyone interested in the band or independent music of the 1980s. We Jam Econo has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1; the film was shot on video and looks good in this release, with the original camerawork simple but well executed and the archival footage cleaner and better preserved than one would imagine. The archival audio is a bit more problematic, given the dodgy quality of many club sound systems, but the Dolby Digital Stereo mastering makes the most of the source materials, and the best moments are powerful and thrilling. The interviews and performances in We Jam Econo are in English, with optional subtitles in English and French. Plexifilm has loaded this release with plenty of relevant bonus materials, most notably two complete Minutemen shows -- a short 1980 gig at the Starwood in Los Angeles presented in multi-angle format, though we only get to see the band either straight-ahead or from stage left, and a longer 1984 appearance at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club. A 1985 acoustic performance staged for Los Angeles public-access television is also included, along with outtakes. Also on board are three Minutemen music videos, an unedited interview with the band shot by a Bard College student television crew, and 19 deleted interview segments recorded for the film. This is an exemplary presentation of a superb film, and is certainly one of the best music-related releases of 2006.
