Welcome to the Grindhouse: the Teacher/Pick-up

Overview

BCI has assembled another budget-priced collection of vintage drive-in fare with this double-bill of Pick-Up and The Teacher. Both films sport anamorphic widescreen transfers that benefit from nicely remastered source materials. Unfortunately, the transfers are not flagged for progressive scan televisions and suffer from some cheap mastering that manifests itself in the form of pixellated video grain during the films' darker scenes. Both films are presented with their original mono mixes: The Teacher sounds fine ...

Angel Tompkins, Jay North, Jill Senter DVD The WELCOME TO THE GRINDHOUSE series pays tribute to the exploitation classics that served as inspiration for Robert Rodriguez and ... Quentin Tarantino's 2007 homage. This program presents a grindhouse double feature: in PICK-UP (1975), two young female hitchhikers confront their troubled pasts when they become stranded in the Florida Everglades; and in THE TEACHER (1974), a beautiful high school teacher seduces her star pupil only to provoke the raging jealousy of a town misfit who has just been released from a mental hospital. More About This Product

Both films are presented with their original mono mixes: The Teacher sounds fine but Pick-Up's mix seems a bit muffled at times. In terms of extras, the viewer is allowed the option of watching the films on their own or linked together as a "grindhouse experience." The latter option links the two films together and adds vintage theater intros before and between plus a variety of trailers, including such titles as Weekend With The Babysitter and Van Nuys Blvd.. Most of this material is sourced from pre-existing video elements but it's a nice touch and adds a fun element to the viewing experience. To sum up, Welcome to the Grindhouse: Pick-Up/The Teacher might annoy some viewers with the cheap mastering of an otherwise strong visual presentation but hardcore b-movie fans will enjoy its generous programming and cost-effective price.
