Wet Hot American Summer

Overview

The "wet" part of the title Wet Hot American Summer was a given. The pre-spring, 28-day shoot in the woods of western Pennsylvania saw rain for 22 days. And not just sprinkles, but torrential downfalls that turned the live-in set into a quagmire. If you have any desire at all to be a movie actor, watch the "behind the scenes" chapter included in the DVD; the actors are soggy, pale, and exhausted, but there is a joyful camaraderie that keeps their spirits up. The conclusion: Acting's not so bad, it looks kind of ...

The conclusion: Acting's not so bad, it looks kind of fun -- if it's indoors. The disc also includes lively commentary by director David Wain, co-writer Michael Showalter, and star Janeane Garofalo, all of whom are perhaps the biggest fans of this middling parody as each scene seems to crack them up anew. The crew also provides commentary for the deleted scenes (why was the shot of the chef with no pants under his apron cut?), and the still photo gallery is accompanied by four songs from the movie, a nice touch. There's also a chapter of cast and crew interviews from the set, but the folks behind the video camera asked each of the subjects the same questions -- mainly, "Describe the comedy of this movie" -- and after Garofalo gives her answer the rest are simply repetitious and not a little pretentious. The producers have also included -- as a "bonus" -- an alternate soundtrack that peppers the film with squeaking sound effects replicating the noise of human gas emissions -- yes, farts.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Sarah Sloboda
Sex, drugs, car wrecks, spacecraft, radio celebrities, David Hyde Pierce, and more: Wet Hot American Summer has it all! Loaded with absurd laughs, this film is a refreshing twist on '80s teen angst and summer camp. Viewers who like to forget they're watching a film, beware: The characters and the film itself are constantly aware of themselves as a spectacle, and a lot of the humor relies on a viewer's ability to laugh at filmmaking. Writers David Wain and Michael Showalter (The State) found creative ways to "adhere" to action film conventions and create laughs in unusual places by their characters' strange reactions to the events in the script. Subtly downplayed, many big names like Jeannine Garofalo, Michael Showalter, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Marguerite Moreau, and the aforementioned David Hyde Pierce appear in a hilarious mess of events intertwined by one thing: the last day of summer camp. Director David Wain's first full-length feature made its debut at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, and due to limited distribution, only screened in selected lucky theaters.
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman
The movie is so hilariously sly about something so fetishistically trivial that at times it appears to take in an entire culture through a lens made of cheese.
Chicago Reader
It's not a sex movie but a parody, and the loose feel is part of its genius. Lisa Alspector
