Loosely based on the 1958 comedy The Reluctant Debutante starring Sandra Dee, the family-friendly comedy What a Girl Wants features popular Nickelodeon teen star Amanda Bynes in her first feature-starring performance after her debut in Big Fat Liar. She plays teenager Daphne Reynolds, who lives in New York City with her musician mother, Libby (Kelly Preston). After she turns 17, Daphne is undecided about her future, so she takes off by herself to London in search of her father. She immediately meets cute musician Ian (Oliver James) before sneaking in to her father's estate to surprise him. He turns out to be Lord Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth), a fabulously wealthy aristocrat who doesn't even know that she exists. He had met her mother in Morocco and the two were married in a tribal ceremony. Upon their return to England, she left him and went back to the U.S. without ever revealing that she was pregnant. The uptight Henry is already flustered by his campaign for election, advised by doting aide Alistair Payne (Jonathan Pryce). His no-nonsense fiancée, Glynnis (Anna Chancellor), and her bratty daughter, Clarissa (Christina Cole), are threatened by Daphne's presence, thinking that she will hurt Henry's political aspirations by causing a scandal. However, the family matriarch (Eileen Atkins) takes a liking to her and she soon finds herself trying to liven things up at several stuffy aristocratic parties. Meanwhile, the evil Glynnis and Clarissa conspire against her by trying to sabotage her appearance, leading up to the conclusion at Daphne's very own coming-out party.

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Tween fave and Nickelodeon veteran Amanda Bynes comes of age in her first starring role as Daphne, a free-spirited force of nature. Upon her 17th birthday, Daphne departs from her home in New York -- and her single mom (Kelly Preston), who works as a wedding singer -- and ventures to London to track down the father she has never known. Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones's Diary heartthrob Colin Firth costars as the buttoned-up Sir Henry Dashwood, a politician unaware of his daughter's existence (thanks to his scheming adviser, portrayed by Jonathan Pryce). Dashwood is understandably taken aback by the unpredictable and endearingly klutzy Daphne, but he soon begins to question his aspirations for higher office once he falls under the influence of his rock-the-house, Coco Puffs-scarfing daughter. This does not sit well with his adviser, nor with his social-climbing fiancée and her snotty daughter, whose schemes to humiliate Daphne backfire. "Get over yourself," Daphne informs her, "I'm staying." Making this wish-fulfillment fantasy complete is Oliver James as Ian, the nicest boyfriend in the world, who counsels Daphne to be herself. "Why are you trying so hard to fit in," he asks, "when you were born to stand out?" And Bynes is a standout -- funny, charming, and sympathetic -- in a film that fans of the makeover comedy The Princess Diaries will want for command performances at home.

I have never seen a chickflick that I have truely liked - until now that is. This movie about a 18 year old girl tells the sweet story of a girl who just wants to be with her dad. It is sweet and not over the top romantic or filled with silly blonds (or others) who always get the guy. Daphne (the main character) is unique character who believes in being yourself no matter what those around you think. Many lessons are learned throughout the story and I think this a great dad and daughter movie. It is all together the best chickflick I have ever seen. - There are a few things to watch out for though. Daphne wears some skimpy, tight, and belly showing outfits - typically American. A boy in the film loves women, and he obviously likes trying to touch there rears. He is punished by Daphne for his efforts but in the end he is seen squeezing a womans rear. The a-- word is used is used once.

I think the cover photo is very misleading as it gives no hint that this is a very clean and hilarious family movie in the mold of "The Princess Diaries." While the outfits are not very conservative, the cover photo is not representative of what's in this movie. Aside from a drop of bad language, this movie is free of innuendos or other adult content. Its story of a daughter's quest to connect with her father (which is what the title refers to) is very heartwarming. I recommend it for families who enjoyed "The Princess Diaries."

Ok, so yes, I admit Colin was the only reason I went to see this movie in the theater.... Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have gone seen it. But it turned out to be a really great movie anyway. All the girls from the dorm that I went to see it with really liked it too. (and they weren't die-hard Colin Firth fans like me either!!! LOL!)

I was excited about seeing this movie just to goggle at Colin Firth. He is clearly the best performer in this movie however this movie was worth the price of admission and turned out to be a pleasant, if somewhat predicatable movie.

This was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It was funny, clean, and something I would not be ashamed to show anyone - that cannot be said of most movies these days. Added to this, my niece, Marianne Jenkins, worked as a unit manager on the movie.

These days when teens are portrayed as sex-crazed smokers, drinkers and druggies it was nice to have an interesting feel-good movie to take my young daughters to. Good music and Amanda Bynes is an appealing teen. But I will admit the reason I went was to see Colin Firth! Definitely what this girl wants!

My Mom, my best friend, her mom, and myself all loved this movie. My brother and my friend's brother, on the other hand, didn't 'get it'. Making me think most guys wouldn't. But almost every girl out there will LOVE it!

I watched What A Girl Wants thinking it might be just another teen movie. I was pleasantly surprised! Although I picked this movie specifically for Collin Firth, I enjoyed every minute of it. The language was exteremely minimal, if any, the acting was great, and best of all it would appeal to all ages. I'm 36 and I loved it. It had a great blend of romance, comedy and drama. I definately recommend it to any one who enjoys Cinderella-style movies, but Collin Firth fans will LOVE it, simply because of how incredible he looks in this movie. His chemistry with Kelly Preston is amazing!

I rented this movie with a friend because I had rented everything else I wanted to see. I didn't think I'd enjoy it but we intived a bunch of people over the next the next day becuase we loved it! Amanda plays a girl trying to find out who she is and what she wants to do with her life.A True story about finding yourself. Also The Songs were amazing!

I loved this movie! Every time I watched it, even if it was only the ending, I cried. The part where Daphne's dad comes to New York, at the wedding, and tells her I Love You, it's just so heartwarming and sad, but like happy sad, you know? I thought Amanda Bynes did an amazing job with this movie, and so did the rest of the cast. Daphne and Ian(Oliver James) made a really cute couple in the movie. Oliver is just so cute! And his voice, when he sings..wow! Also in Raise Your Voice, with Hilary Duff, his voice is amazing!
