Overview

Garry Shandling makes his big-screen debut as a leading man in this sci-fi romantic comedy. Harold (Shandling) is an alien from another galaxy sent to Earth on a vital mission: in order to ensure that his civilization will prevail, Harold must impregnate an Earth woman. But he discovers that this is more easily said than done, as he quickly gets a crash course in the arcane rituals of the human courtship process. What's worse, just when Harold thinks he's making progress in Earthbound seduction, he discovers that the males of his planet don't physically interface properly with women on Earth, so he is issued a variety of bizarre gadgets to complete his assignment. Mike Nichols directed What Planet Are You From?, which also features a top-notch supporting cast, including Annette Bening, John Goodman, Ben Kingsley, and Camryn Manheim.

The vagaries of human courtship and heterosexual relationships are deftly spoofed in What Planet Are You From? -- a wryly amusing vehicle for standup comic and TV star Garry Shandling. He's whimsically cast as the last hope of a male-dominated alien civilization, dispatched to Earth for mating with a compatible human female, thus propagating his dying species. Despite his supposedly exhaustive indoctrination on dating rituals, Garry strikes out repeatedly before meeting eccentric Annette Bening, who just might be the perfect woman. Or not. Shandling's script relies heavily on shopworn fish-out-of-water gags and comic misinterpretation of slang expressions. And his amorous alien displays the same seeming lack of emotion and general cluelessness that women often attribute to men -- which, of course, is how his otherworldly origin escapes detection. But under the skilled direction of Mike Nichols (Primary Colors), Shandling and his talented supporting cast bring a feather-light touch to this delightful comedy of manners.
