Overview

Rodger Grossman's long-gestating screen biography of Los Angeles punk trailblazer Darby Crash was finally released in 2007, with this DVD edition following shortly after its brief run in theaters. What We Do Is Secret has been given a widescreen transfer to disc, letterboxed at the 1.85:1 aspect ratio on conventional televisions and enhanced for 16:9 playback on widescreen monitors; the transfer is sharp enough to reveal just a bit of the grain of the Super 16mm source materials, and overall the image looks quite good and the color balance is accurate. The audio has been mastered in two formats, Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo and 5.1 Surround; the fidelity is good in both, though the surround mix isn't significantly livelier than the stereo version. The dialogue is in English, with optional Spanish subtitles. As a bonus, the disc includes an optional commentary track featuring director Grossman and leading man Shane West as they discuss the many obstacles to completing the movie and the research that went into the project, as well as the film's original theatrical trailer (previews of several other Peace Arch Entertainment releases also appear before the main menu comes up). The DVD edition of What We Do Is Secret doesn't add much to the original feature, but it presents the film looking and sounding fine and it's an acceptable substitute for punk fans who missed the film during its short theatrical run.
