The film details the lives of four ethnically diverse families -- black, Latino, Jewish, and Asian -- during one frantic Thanksgiving. The film opens with Ronald (Dennis Haysbert), an African-American who works as a spin doctor for the Republican politico; he and his wife Audrey (Alfre Woodard) are in the midst of preparing for their white dinner guests. Meanwhile, at the Latino household, young Anthony Avila (Douglas Spain) invites his womanizing father for Thanksgiving dinner, unbeknownst to his schoolteacher mother Elisabeth (Mercedes Ruehl). At the same time, the Seeling family is confronted with their daughter Rachel's (Kyra Sedwick) lesbianism, when she brings home her lover Carla (Julianna Margulies). Finally, Vietnamese immigrant Trinh Nguyen (Joan Chen) struggles to understand her Americanized children after she discovers condoms in her eldest daughter's jacket and a gun in her son's room.

A Way to a Person's Heart - Family and Food

Great movie, reflecting the similarites and the slight differences of what is being served during the Thanksgiving holiday among a Black, Latino, Asian and Jewish family. The main entree, of course, is turkey, but the variety of side dishes is so intriguing and my palate yearns for a sample of all of the food. Unfortunately, the Asian family burns the turkey and has to settle for KFC fried chicken.

Lainie Kazan bombs in Whats Cooking!

Will this woman quit acting? Everything she does is B rated! She adds D quality to an otherwise b rated film!

    Tantalising!

I saw this film before it was released in the UK and found it had a wonderful story. The film is a nice break from the 'norm' of Holllywood's big blockbuster films. This film show's that you do not need to have tons of special effects & action to enjoy a film, which is what I like a lot of the time. I got to meet the director/writer, Gurinda Chandra, after I saw the film. She said that she wanted to make a film where you got to see a wide range of cultures. Too many times you see more than one culture in a film where they always have to be isolated to their groups and associated with hatred towards the other groups. This film takes the viewer through a range of emotions, from start to finish, that will leave you with a sense of happiness at the end. Never before have I seen a film where the audience applauded the film with such genuine fulfilment.

Great Comedy For The Whole Family

What's Cooking is a film that the whole family can enjoy. Well written, acted and directed the film tells the story of four family's of different ethnic backgrounds getting together to celebrate Thanksgiving. Featuring an all star cast featuring Joan Chen, Julianna Margulies, Mercedes Ruehl, Kyra Sedgwick, Alfre Woodard and A. Martinez to name a few. Written & Directed by Gurinder Chadha and produced by Jeffrey Taylor, Ethan Hurt and Steven D. Kravitz for Because Entertainment the film skillfully weaves together a story that is both interesting and entertaining. I would highly recommend this film to anybody that enjoys the cinema but is put off by the vulgarity in so many of today's films.

    Suprising Hit

I rented the movie becuase I had seen the preview on another video. This movie was really good. It was funny, touching and really hit home and gives you a glimpse into the life of other cultures and religions and lets you see that we are all not so different.
