Overview

This HBO documentary examines baseball's golden age from the Great Depression on through the late 1950s. Using archival footage and keen commentary, When It Was a Game shows many of baseball's greatest moments and monuments. From the first color filming of a baseball game to the 1938 World Series and on through the careers of Joe DiMagio and Mickey Mantle, this film is very thorough in scope. The game itself is not the only subject explored. In several cases, the documentary details how the sport held together a nation during WWII and how people viewed the game as America's sport. ~ Ed Atkinson

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Pete Segall
Nothing in America has been mythologized on film more than baseball, and this beguiling documentary, produced originally for HBO, is a worthy entry into the canon of baseball movies. The film is made up entirely of home movies, shot by players and fans alike, between 1934 and 1957. The bright, grainy footage is the perfect vehicle for baseball: a relaxed, friendly way of seeing the game in its simpler, perpetually sunny youth. Neither as historical nor as academically bent as Ken Burns's masterful Baseball, When It Was a Game, true to the confines of its footage, is heavy on nostalgia, lingering on everything from the Cardinals' Pepper Martin and his baseball juggling act to scenes of such fallen ballparks as Shibe Park in Philadelphia and Chicago's original Comiskey Park (1910-1990, RIP). It may seem like regular stuff, but to the baseball fan, catching glimpses of this most ordinary sport in its true form is precious. Without spectacle or sermon, this is a fitting tribute to the boys of summer.
