Aiding and abetting the commandoes are Allied undercover agents Mary Mary Ure and Heidi Ingrid Pitt. Also on hand is a British officer Patrick Wymark, who masterminded the mission. Somewhere, somehow, someone amongst the Allies is going to turn out to be a traitor. There's also a neat plot twist in store when the commandoes manage to reach the American general -- which leads to yet another twist. The vertigo-inducing climax has made Where Eagles Dare one of the most sought-after of "early" Eastwood starring features. The film was written directly for the screen by espionage novelist Alistair MacLean.

In this 1969 spine-tingler, allied soldiers infiltrate a mountaintop castle in the Bavarian Alps to rescue a captured general who knows the plans for D-Day. The production features parachute jumps, gunplay, explosions, spectacular scenery, and frozen hands reaching for survival on a rock face. And then there are the narrow escapes in which the heroes dodge gunfire in castle corridors, drive a bus through mountain passes, and take off in a plane thinking all is well when it isn't. In short, Where Eagles Dare is a pip of a film from start to finish. Rousing music and a lively script, adapted by Alistair MacLean from the novel he wrote, complement bully performances by Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. As British Maj. John Smith and American Lt. Morris Schaffer, raspy Burton barks commands while cool-man Eastwood nullifies Nazis with blades and bullets. Excellent performances from Michael Hordern as British Vice Adm. Rolland and Derren Nesbitt as Nazi Major von Harpen support the performances of Burton and Eastwood. But it is the action and the pacing that are the real stars. Dressed in German uniforms, the allied infiltrators take a perilous cable-car ride, get pulled through windows, and mingle with the enemy while a new danger lurks around every corner. Surprises abound as the allies discover that not everyone is who he is supposed to be. Meanwhile, the audience chews knuckles as the music builds, and a final, shocking secret manifests itself.

    EXCELLENT DEPICTION OF LEADERSHIP AND COURAGE

    VERY EXCITING MOVIE. RICHARD BURTON AND CLINT EASTWOOD HAVE PLAYED REALISTIC MAJOR SMITH AND LT SCHREFFER RESPECTIVELY. MOST EXCITING ARE :- ENTER THE CASTLE THRU CABLE CAR ESCAPE IN THE CABLE CAR CHASE TO AIR FIELD SAW THE MOVIE 15 TIMES, AND STILL MY FAVOURITE MUSIC. EVEN THE GERMAN OFFICERS ARE GREAT

    Excellent book to movie

    I saw the film first and then read the book. Many times I've preferred the book to the movie not so in this case. As I read the book I felt I was reading the script. The only change was the addition of Mary Ure's character which worked well. The casting of Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood was fantastic. Both had excellent chemistry and worked off each other very well.

    The film is exciting from the beginning to the end. Although the film was done in the 1960s it's timeless.

    I liked it too, but...

    I saw this entertaining, well acted and directed movie when it was first released in 1968. The location at the Schloss(castle) Hohenwerfen in Bavaria was outstanding. Alistair MacLean's well paced script would be difficult to best. The acting was first rate and there was never a dull moment. However, as in too many war movies, the Germans turn out to be too easy to defeat. They fall by the hundreds, while the ''eagles'' suffer one casualty from German soldiers and Richard Burton gets a slight hand wound. If it were that easy to defeat Nazi Germany, it wouldn't have taken the allies 6 years to do the job at such a fearful cost in lives. I never met a veteran, including my 3 uncles, who said that defeating the Germans was as easy as Hollywood often portrays it. A final thought. Why is this movie not yet available on DVD?

    Supercharged superheroics

    This movie is all about FUN! Enough excitement to make you forget that this movie is over 2 hours long. The acting is first rate, as are the action scenes. And the ''spurious logic'' used by Richard Burton in the briefing room scene towards the end is a classic!

    The Best War Story Around

    I first saw Where Eagles Dare when it was first released. I was amazed that a movie could so closely follow the book without any ''hollywood'' changes. Acting is fantastic, plot twists are never ending, and even though there are two minor romances, they do not detract from the story.

    Great Movie

    Not only is the acting first rate but the scenery is also outstanding. Bavaria, the Alps and the schoss all combine to rekindle my images and experiences in the same area of the world. If you are not a big fan of the war movie genre, give this a try. Where Eagles Dare, is of course a war movie but without all the front line violence. A clever, witty work of cinema with twists and turns to keep you glued to your seat. Great movie, one of Clint's best.

    Excellent Movie

    This Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood film is fantastic. The movie has many twists and turns. It will leave you in suspense the entire show. My 5 star rating is based on the acting and the story. If you like wartime films or action films, you must see this picture!
