Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
This collection of captivating Maurice Sendak stories and poems begins with one of Sendak's best-known tales, "Where the Wild Things Are," brought to life with shimmering animation. Peter Schickele (a.k.a. P.D.Q. Bach) composed the jazz-flavored score and narrates the tale of untamed Max, who imagines a forest of weird creatures where he reigns as King of All Wild Things. "The Nutshell Kids" gathers musical segments from the Sendak-inspired film "Really Rosie," in which Carole King performs Sendak's poems "Alligators All Around," "Pierre," "One Was Johnny," and "Chicken Soup with Rice." Schickele returns to narrate "In the Night Kitchen," a mildly eerie nocturnal flight of fancy in which a young boy lends a hand to some overeager chefs.

    Worth every penny

This DVD is worth the money if only for Carol King singing "Chicken Soup with Rice" The animation is a little clunky but holds true to Sendaks brilliance.

The Next Best Thing to Reading Aloud

The books in this collection comprise some of my daughter's read aloud favorites. They are lightly animated, it doesn't interfere with your own idea of how the pictures should look. The music is charming and the voices are perfect. Its the best of read aloud, AND it enables me to get in a shower on a hectic day.
