Overview

One of the most gleefully tasteless comedies of the pre-Farrelly Brothers era, Carl Reiner's adaptation of Robert Klane's novel gets a straightforward release on DVD. Where's Poppa? has been given two transfers to disc for this edition -- a widescreen version letterboxed at the aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and a pan-and-scan version at the full-frame ratio of 1.33:1. The widescreen version already looks a shade crowded in spots, but certainly offers more detail, but both offer a well-rendered and accurate presentation of the film's original look. The film's English-language audio has been presented in its original mix, mastered in Dolby Digital Mono, while optional subtitles in English, Spanish, and French are also included. While the disc is short on extras, one will be of great interest to fans of the film -- the little-seen original ending of the picture, which actually tops what's gone before for sheer outrage. The only other bonus is the film's original theatrical trailer, but this is still a strong-looking presentation of a movie not well-served on home video in the past.
