Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
A tight, fun little romantic comedy that made a big star of female lead Sandra Bullock, this hit benefits greatly from the light-as-air touch of director Jon Turteltaub, who doesn't condescend as much to his audience as many of the genre's other filmmakers. A throwback to the screwball genre of another era, the film coasts along on charm, memorable dialogue (a line about the main character who "sits in a booth like a veal" as a transit system toll collector is a nice, early turn of phrase), and palpable chemistry between its leads. Supporting players are excellent, particularly Jack Warden as an irascible grandfather who's the brains of the outfit, and Michael Rispoli as a clueless suitor. The real selling point here is that the whole affair is presented with a wink and a nudge, as if Turteltaub and his cast are telling the viewer, "Yeah, we know it's all pretty goofy, but sit back, relax, and enjoy it as much as we are." Everybody seems to be having such a good time that it's impossible not to like While You Were Sleeping (1995) and that's where the film succeeds; in less capable hands and with less astute casting, it probably would have been a major dud. A gifted director of breezy, bubbly comedy, Turteltaub has only gone astray when attempting to create serious drama, such as his later flop Instinct (1999).

So She Told Him That It Was While He Was Sleeping...

For my family, it's a tradition to watch Ever After and While You Were Sleeping every time we get together. I guess that all families have their quirks, but I like this quirk. My aunt, sister, and I would peel out pajamas, ice cream, and blankets as we would snuggle down to watch While You Were Sleeping, and I have to admit that is where some of my favorite memories were born. This film oozes with family bonding. I can already hear Jack and Peter's mother repeating, "These mashed potatoes are so creamy!" And Elsie's there offering her infamous eggnog. Saul, the angelic godfather is there, smoking his cigar and offering up wise advice to lonely Lucy. Just like Dan in Real Life, While You Were Sleeping dabbles in family life, humor, heartache, and a little bit of romance. So go ahead and start your own family experience with While You Were Sleeping. You won't regret it. ;)

    Great feel good movie!

What a wonderful feel good movie. Lucy (Sandra Bullock) is in love with Peter, (Peter Gallagher), which she has never met, but is thrown into his world after she saves him from being hit by a train. She meets his dysfunctional family in the hospital (Peter is in a coma and the family is under the assumption that Lucy is Peter's fiance. She is then introduced to Peter's brother, Jack (Bill Pullman),and sparks fly. She is in turmoil with her newfound feelings for Jack and trying to keep us the pretense with Peter's family about her engagement to Peter. After a few mishaps, true love wins! The Chicago scenery & atmosphere is true to form. A family friendly movie and a real treat.

    Pure Romance!

This was the first movie I ever bought on video to begin my movie collection and I have never regretted the purchase. This is such a wonderful film particulary because of the heart felt performances by its two leading actors Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman. This film introduced me to Bill and I think he was the perfect choice to play Jack. If I were Lucy there'd be no contest in picking Jack over Peter. The comedic touches are priceless and Jack's family completely steal every scene they're in. It's a feel good movie that makes you realize that if you don't rush into anything the love of your life will come along. Definitely two thumbs from this hopeless romantic!

Let's see more of Bill Pullman

I love these kind of movies. This one is made better by the presence of Bill Pullman. He pulls off the everyman mixed with such sex appeal so easily. I have seen this movie over and over just for him. Very hot!!

    Things can't be forced!

This movie was not only hilarious, but a touching love story between a woman without a family and two brothers with the same loving yet odd family. While You Were Sleeping is a perfect therapy for anyone who needs a laugh or who is frustrated because they have not yet found ''their perfect companion.'' Sandra Bullock's role is a young woman named Lucy who leads a very uninteresting life as a toll-booth operator. The highlight of her day is when Peter Callaghan, played by Peter Gallagher, comes by and gives her his token to pass. One day, Peter is mugged at the train station where Lucy works and she saves his life after he was pushed onto the tracks. A miscommunication at the hospital leads his family to believe that she is his fiancé. From there, the movie takes off on a wildly hilarious chase while Lucy tries to figure out whether she is in love with Peter or his brother, Jack. It is therapeutic to anyone who needs to laugh, or anyone who wants to have a good time. The twist in this movie makes it interesting because, like so many other women, Lucy is asking herself, ¿Which guy do I want?¿. However, it is not a comedy alone because of the romance involved. My title, ¿Things can¿t be forced!¿, was chosen because so many people are frustrated with their love life. Many try too hard and force themselves into marriage out of fear that they will be single all of their life. This movie proves that things just cannot be forced. No matter how much you need something, you can¿t manipulate the circumstances to make it come true. Manipulation will cause things to sour very quickly. This movie shows what happens when Lucy tried to manipulate Peter and her into a relationship. You have to see the movie to find out what happens when you let fate decide your course of life!
