Overview

Dereck Joubert's film is a cross between The Bear and Homeward Bound, but features an elephant in the lead role. The disc offers a standard full-frame transfer. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. There are no subtitles on this release. Supplemental materials feature a pair of animated shorts, Clown of the Jungle and Big Wash. This is a fine, if uninspired family oriented DVD that has a list price some might consider too high for a disc with so few extras.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
This direct-to-video live-action Walt Disney adventure mixes a bit of Bambi, a dash of The Incredible Journey, and a hearty dollop of Dumbo into a rich natural gumbo, breathtakingly photographed by Emmy Award-winning nature filmmaker Dereck Joubert. Joubert captures majestic landscapes and African wildlife in a way that may even distract déjà vu-inclined parents from the formulaic story. And kids are sure to be captivated by the journey of Whispers, an adorable newborn elephant who is separated from his mother, shunned by his adopted herd, and paired with fellow outcast Groove in a search for water and family. Lending their voices to the critters are Angela Bassett (as Groove), Betty White, Anne Archer, Joan Rivers, and Joanna Lumley (of Absolutely Fabulous). Although it earns a G rating, Whispers includes some scenes of forced separation, animal attacks (by lions and tigers and crocodiles, oh my!), and gun-toting Takers (poachers) that may upset some youngsters.
All Movie Guide
Whispers recalls the by the numbers nature films with voices from 1960s TV, The Wonderful World of Disney, and feature film favorites such as 1963's The Incredible Journey. This foray into the animal kingdom isn't as charming as its predecessors, and adults will find the dialogue inane at times and the liberal borrowing from Bambi not a little insulting. Clearly, grown-ups are not the target audience, and children will find the wise-cracking anthropomorphism funny and the Lion King-like soundtrack warmly familiar. A brief nighttime attack by a pack of lions may alarm younger children.
