Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A top-flight score by Irving Berlin and the inspired teaming of Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye made White Christmas the biggest money-maker of 1954, and after nearly six decades its appeal hasn't diminished at all. Bing and Danny play Army buddies who become popular song-and-dance men after World War II. Accompanied by gal pals Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen, they vacation one winter at the failing Vermont resort owned by their former commanding officer, Dean Jagger. Their Christmas benefit performance pulls Jagger out of the red while at the same time affording us a plethora of famous Berlin tunes -- including "Blue Skies," "Heat Wave," and the Oscar-nominated "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep" -- performed in production numbers imaginatively staged by director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca). A partial reworking of the 1942 Paramount smash Holiday Inn, which also starred Crosby and introduced this film's title song, White Christmas is a colorful, high-spirited extravaganza, a clear standout among the tunefests made during the waning years of the Hollywood movie musical. A natural for holiday-season viewing, it's equally enjoyable at any time of the year, and a movie you'll want to revisit often.
All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
Considering the amount of talent involved, it's surprising -- and rather a shame -- that White Christmas is only an enjoyable little trifle rather than a truly classic movie musical. The talent involved -- Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen, Irving Berlin, Michael Curtiz -- is a perfect embarrassment of riches. And yet they're all in service to a screenplay that is, at best, derivative and very rarely inspired. There's simply too little script, and what there is doesn't try hard enough. Still, the screenplay does provide excuses for a number of marvelous Berlin tunes, performed to a fare-thee-well by the quartet of stars, and these are well worth watching under any circumstances. Beyond the legendary title song (written for an earlier film), there's also the delightful "Sisters," which in both its original and reprised forms is considered a classic. But pay special attention to Clooney's creamy, entrancing rendition of the beautiful "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me"; this is a genuinely superior musical performance. Throw in such other treats as "Blue Skies" and "Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep," as well as the amusing antics of Kaye, the laid-back playing of Crosby, and the effervescent dancing of Vera-Ellen, and most people will be more than willing to sit through the corny script.

I just have one question: Why can't there be any more 'Bing Crosbys' and 'Rosemary Clooneys' out there today? Everything about this movie--plot, music, costumes, etc--is superb.

I can't imagine what the world would have been like without these four wonderful and talented stars. They make this movie come alive and make you wish for a true White Christmas more than ever! It is a wonderful movie for people of all ages!

A true classic. The whole family can enjoy this patriotic film of our past. I wish I could have lived in this time and gone to this Vermont Inn. A must see each holiday season.

My parents introduced me to this movie as a child and I fell in love with it. This movie is one of the greatest. It is wonderful in every way.

This has been a holiday staple in my family for years. It just isn't Christmas until we watch White Christmas. The music and dancing are what make this movie truly unique. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are a great comedy and music duo. I only wish they had done more movies together. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants an extra shot of Christmas spirit for the season.

My husband and I watch this movie every year. It's become a great way for me to get into the spirit of the holiday. (Okay, okay...my husband humors me by watching with me). It's pretty hokey in places but if you like sentimental music and great dance numbers then this movie could be for you.

I love this movie. I've been watching it every year during the holidays since before I can remember and I still love it. I was so disappointed when I learned I'm one of the only people my age who has even heard of it, but I plan to change that! No Christmas is fully enjoyable without seeing that end scene with the ballerinas and the Christmas tree and the snow! I'm always right there with Bing-dreamin of a white Christmas!

This by far is the best christmas movie ever. I watch it every year...the humor is great and the singing is classic. I really enjoy watching a movie that can stand the test of time.

My husband and I watch it several times each Christmas season to get us into the spirit of the holiday. I love watching old movies and this year seemed especially special since Rosemary Clooney just recently passed away.

This has been my favorite Christmas movie in as many years as I can remember. The entire cast is just sensational. Not a Christmas goes by without me and my family watching it. A must for me!

I have been watching ''White Christmas'' since I was a little girl. My mother shared it with me and my seven brothers and sisters. She loved all the greats! I have been introducing many old musicals to my children. We are stationed overseas with the Air Force and have an extensive video/DVD collection. I have wanted this movie for a long time, so I ordered it through Amizon.Com about a week ago. We received it yesterday! I told my children (daughter 15, son 16) that this movie is a very memorable part of my child hood. My father was killed in Vietnam and the military theme of the movie hits home. I didn't get to start the movie until 10:00 last night. My children stayed up with me to watch this wonderful movie. My heart stopped when Bing sang ''White Christmas'' in the very beginning of the movie. My daughter had tears in her eyes and my son turned off the computer!! It will always be a part of our family tradition. I hope you make it part of yours. They don't make movies like this anymore!!

I have been watching this movie ever since I was 8 years old and not a year has gone by without watching it at least once over the Christmas holiday. It's so good my family and I even watch it throughout the whole year!

THIS IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE BEST CHRISTMAS MOVIE OF ALL TIME. OUR FAMILY WATCHES IT EACH YEAR ON CHRISTMAS DAY (AND SOMETIMES SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE), BUT WE ALL GATHER FOR CHRISTMAS BREAKFAST, OPEN OUR PRESENTS AND THEN ''SETTLE IN'' TO WATCH WHITE CHRISTMAS. IT JUST WOULD NOT BE CHRISTMAS WITHOUT THIS WONDERFUL MOVIE. I GAVE THE DVD TO OUR DAUGHTER THIS YEAR AND SHE TOOK IT TO HER FUTURE IN-LAWS, HOPING TO CONTINUE THE TRADITION WITH THEM. I WISH THEY MADE MORE MOVIES LIKE THIS ONE! GAYLE
