Overview

When it comes to old-school hip-hop movies, Wild Style is a classic. Outside its somewhat juvenile story, the film presents a grand look into the birth of a musical genre. Rhino Home Video's 2002 DVD edition packages a new digital transfer from the original 16 mm film with a wealth of bonus features.

As with any movie where music plays a key role, audio quality is of chief importance, and Wild Style delivers. The 5.1 audio adds great punch to classic hip-hop anthems from Grandmaster Flash, the Rock Steady Crew, Blondie, and others. The full screen video shows age in comparison. Colors might be somewhat muted and grain is readily apparent, but these are issues with the original print, not from the digital transfer. The supplemental material is offered in a way that truly complements the movie. Rhino's menus bristle with energy and take on the movie's graffiti-oriented style. The scene index is like a party all to itself, as FMV thumbnails bounce to a throbbing beat. Fab 5 Freddie and director Charlie Ahearn's commentary is fast-paced and witty. A cool trailer and a pumping music video set the tone for the film. Deleted scenes add new twists. The slide show (a wonderful mini-documentary all its own) can be viewed with either musical accompaniment or descriptions.

    The old school hip-hop heads!

This is one of best hip-hop movies because there was no acting everyone played themselves. Good movie to watch if you want to learn about how the old school cats got down.

    From the Beginning

Before the Platinum there were Gold medallions. This is a treasured classic from the past although most don’t know about this sequential piece of the rap puzzle , this is a must if you care to learn about Hip Hop, this is Hip Hop 101. And yes even before Run DMC.
