Overview

This thriller takes place in Blue Bay, Florida, where social-climbing guidance counselor Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon) is indifferent to teen-socialite Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards), who retaliates by accusing him of rape, an accusation that leads to his suspension by the school and a rejection from the country club. He can't afford a big attorney, so he hires shrewd Ken Bowden (Bill Murray), while Kelly's mom, Sandra Van Ryan (Theresa Russell), Sam's former lover, gets a platoon of top lawyers. Trailer-trash Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell) backs up Kelly's claim and additional plot twists and turns develop. The seldom-seen Carrie Snodgrass (Diary of a Mad Housewife) has a supporting role in this film.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Clark
As trashy as they come, and just about as irresistible, John McNaughton's steamy Florida noir would be downright laughable if its professionalism and stamp of authorship was not in evidence in every gorgeous frame. Stunningly photographed by Jeffrey L. Kimball, Wild Things tweaks the sensibilities in such a way that it almost seems old-fashioned. It delights in throwing twists and turns at the viewer, and surprisingly, virtually all of them are convincing and satisfying. The cast is wonderfully game here, with Matt Dillon and Neve Campbell effectively cast against type, and the inclusion of Bill Murray only points to the film's delirious tongue-in-cheek nature. Wild Things can honestly be called one of the '90s true neo-noirs, as it employs all of its conventions (double-crossing, femme fatales, etc.), but with a refreshing sense of irony. Though the film didn't do bang-up business at the box office, it has developed a well-deserved cult of fans who have discovered its snaky pleasures, such as its overt sexiness and a willingness to bend the rules and give the viewer a really good time.

Wild Things is a cross between the Maltese Falcon and Miami Vice. Add in a little Basic Instinct and you've got a great movie that shamelessly straddles the line between sleaze and art.

Wild Things strats off as a solid film with ultra-hot Denise Richards, over-rated Neve Campbell, and Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Bill Murray who are at least decent in their roles if not delivering Oscar performances here. The hotel room scene where Richards makes good on the movie's title is certainly memorable. The plot seems to unravel near the end of the film. And there's way too much Neve Campbell.

From the director John McNaughton and writer Stephen Peters comes "Wild Things" a bold thriller infused with raw sexuality and sneaky black humor. This is not a film for everyone, but those who enjoyed other kinky thrillers such as "Basic Instinct" and "Fatal Attraction" will not want to miss this. Denise Richards stars as Kelly Van Ryan, a spoiled, rich teenage socialite who is competing with her mother, Sandra (Theresa Russell), for the affection of Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon), Kelly's guidance counselor and Sandra's former lover. When Kelly makes a move on Lombardo, he shoots her down, and she cries rape. Sandra wants to bury Lombardo, but due to lack of evidence, authorities don't believe Kelly. Things change when the white-trash Suzie Toller (Neve Campbell), a classmate of Kelly, claims that Lombardo also raped her in a very similar manner. Lombardo is thrown in jail, is suspended from his job, and loses the respect of the entire town. Lombardo does not have enough money to hire a big shot attorney like the guy Sandra has hired (Robert Wagner), so he hires Kenneth Bowden (Bill Murray), a cheap yet very clever lawyer. While on the stand, Suzie confesses that Kelly devised the entire scheme and forced her to cry rape. This declares Lombardo innocent, and he receives a hefty sum of Sandra's cash. But it's not over yet. A cop (Kevin Bacon) senses that there is something more to the story than the police reports let on, so he digs a little deeper, and you will not believe what he finds. "Wild Things" is a highly unpredictable movie. One that will keep you guessing until the very end. Since this movie was made back in 1998, I cannot think of 5 movies made since then that have even come close to accomplishing that. It is also a very sexually-charged movie, filled with graphic sex scenes and a full-frontal shot of Kevin Bacon's...um...bacon. You mate hate yourself for liking this movie, but I guarantee you will. The ensemble acting for "Wild Things" is way better than expected. Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon clearly have fun with their twisted roles, although their chemistry is a little creepy in some parts. Theresa Russell still can't act, but she is perfect in her one-dimensional role that requires no acting skill whatsoever. Neve Campbell looks out of place here, I'm sure the only reason she was cast was because she was the teen queen of the 90s. My personal favorite performance is that of Denise Richards who does her best work yet in this movie. She is more than believable as both the rape victim and the femme fetale. You will have a lot more respect for Richards after seeing this movie. Bill Murray gives some much-needed comic relief in a character tailor-made for him. Robert Wagner and Daphne Rubin-Vega offer up some decent support. With a great cast, solid directing, and a clever script, "Wild Things" is sleek, sexy, and very clever entertainment. Pick up a copy, you will not regret it. "Wild Things" is rated R for strong sexuality, nudity, language, and some violence.

Wild Things is a hot and steamy mystery staring Denise Richards, Neve Campbell, Kevin Bacon and Matt Dillon. The girls accuse their guidance counselor (Matt Dillon) of rape, but what if he's innocent? What if he's the victim? What if these sexy, young, south Florida girls conspired to frame him so they could sue the wealthy school district? Kevin Bacon plays the detective who unravels the plot. This is a good movie: A sexy, edge of your seat mystery.

I like this movie but it is definitely rated R and not for young children. I like the characters but i like the plot twists more. The movie is kind of slow at first but it gets better. If you like plot twists, beautiful women, and a little humor to boot you should like this movie.

I love this movie! It's hot and kinky! A three-way involving Matt, Denise, and Neve is of course a good thing (yes, we see Denise nearly nude while Neve pours wine on her for Matt to lick) and a full frontal for Kevin Bacon. Wow. Even without those, the plot is awesome, and very twisted. It will keep you guessing 'til the end--and it's a big surprise, too! I still like the sex the best, though.
