Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This NBC sitcom about two brothers running a ramshackle airline on Nantucket Island picked up steam in its second year and ended its sophomore season with a bona fide cliffhanger: Airport lunch-counter owner Helen Chappel (Crystal Bernard) breaks up with her boyfriend, Joe Hackett (series star Tim Daly), and leaves for New York. Season 3 (1991-92) opens in the aftermath of that dramatic departure, but as one might guess, Helen returns to the island -- and, eventually, the lunch counter. Her relationship with Joe isn't the same; but that’s all in keeping with the M.O. of series creators David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee, the ensemble-chemistry whizzes behind Cheers and Frasier. Although few rank Wings in the same class as those landmark series, the show often hits its comedic marks with the best of them. It also welcomes Tony Shalhoub as a full-time cast-member in this run, as cabdriver Antonio Scarpacci. Highlights in this 22-episode run include: "Planes, Trains, and Visiting Cranes," which boasts crossover appearances by Cheers cast members Kelsey Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth (playing Dr. Frasier Crane and wife Lilith); "Das Plane," a hysterical half hour spotlighting William Hickey as crusty old Carlton Blanchard, a recurring character used to good advantage; and "The Bogey Men," in which Joe, brother Brian (Steven Weber), their mechanic Lowell Mather (Thomas Haden Church), and competitor Roy Biggins (David Schramm) try to enjoy a brief golfing vacation, only to find themselves caught in a tropical storm. Other notable outings in Season 3 include "My Brother’s Keeper," featuring and Emmy-nominated guest turn (as Tim’s sister) by Tyne Daly.
