Overview

This little-seen film by Eric Schaeffer has enough extras to keep those interested in the director glued to their DVD players for hours. Not only does Schaeffer star in this romantic comedy about a groom with a sudden case of cold feet, he also delivers a witty running commentary that opens up his psyche, since he relates the film's plot to his own childhood. Also on the commentary track is composer Amanda Kravat, who spends less time discussing her work than asking Schaeffer questions about his life. The 1:85 widescreen transfer looks exceptionally good for a small indie film and the audio is offered in Stereo or 5:1 Surround. Also on the disc are a myriad of extras that include filmographies, production credits, web links, and the theatrical trailer. For such a low-budget film, it's a terrifically rich release on DVD.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Indie auteur Eric Schaeffer (If Lucy Fell) seems intent on becoming Gen X's Woody Allen, an ambition he furthers with Wirey Spindell, an offbeat comedy/drama peopled by eccentric New Yorkers. Schaeffer himself plays the main character, a 37-year-old whose unsatisfying sexual relations with fiancée Callie Thorne send them scurrying to therapists just days before their wedding. Wirey's problem, it seems, has deep-seated roots in childhood debaucheries and substance abuse...and that's the good news. While never quite addressing the film's central question -- what does Wirey's wife-to-be see in him? -- writer-director-star Schaeffer weaves a colorful cinematic tapestry and imbues his supporting characters with charm and wit. He's not afraid to tackle dicey subjects or express himself in bizarre ways, outstripping his apparent inspiration, Woody Allen, in his capacity to shock audiences. Certainly more daring than Schaeffer's previous movies, Wirey Spindell indicates that this uneven but interesting filmmaker is finally finding a distinctive voice.
