Wolfen

Overview

When the full moon appears, that's when the werewolves come out to play in director Michael Wadleigh's horrific Wolfen. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, this is a decent looking print of the film from Warner. While the transfer sports a few imperfections (including some edge enhancement and grain), overall this picture appears to be solid and very clean. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Stereo Surround in English and is not quite as exciting as one might hope. While the mix tends to be clear of any ...

While the transfer sports a few imperfections (including some edge enhancement and grain), overall this picture appears to be solid and very clean. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Stereo Surround in English and is not quite as exciting as one might hope. While the mix tends to be clear of any hiss or distortion, overall the soundtrack is flat and very boring. Also included on this disc are English, French, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Bahasa, Thai, and Korean subtitles, as well as a Dolby Mono soundtrack in French. The extra features on Wolfen are at the bare minimum. Contrary to the packaging (which states there is a commentary track available), the only supplements included on this DVD is a theatrical trailer for the film and some cast/director film highlights.

Great twist on an old theme

A terrific re working of the werewolf idea with bits of the mystical separating it from the typical horror movie. Finney, Hines and especiallly Olmos are terrific in their roles. Very interesting photography that may seem at little artsy but it is very useful is telling this multilayered story of the rape of nature and the natural order of the earth in the name of technology and consumerism and the 'needs of modern man'. It is hard to absorb all of the subtexts in one viewing. Definitely more social commentary than horror movie.

Don't know who wrote the Overview, but it doesn't seem like they

Don't know who wrote the Overview, but it doesn't seem like they actually watched the movie. This is NOT a werewolf movie. It has nothing to do with humans transforming into wolves. That said, I still love this movie - true, as another reviewer mentioned it has social commentary as a major point. But it is still a scary movie with good special effects (for its time) and interesting story line. This is one of the few physical DVDs I have in my collection.

    Go with other ones first.

This came out in 1981 which was the year for werewolf movies. But it still comes nowhere close to its fellow wolf movies of the same year like The Howling and American Werewolf in London. They try to make it seem too intelligent which is fine but they went overboard. They actually should of done a little less thinking and a little more horror. that could have made it a good movie.
