After a scattershot scheduling history on ABC, dating back to the network’s initial Wonder Woman movie in March 1974 (with Cathy Lee Crosby in the lead), the producers contracted with CBS for a full season of episodes under the New Adventures of Wonder Woman banner. In addition to the advent of Lynda Carter in the title role, there was much retooling from the original 13 first-season episodes: The setting advances from WWII to the 1970s, introducing robots, computers, and modern technology into the scripts; regulars Richard Eastham and Beatrice Colen are gone; Diana Prince gets a new boss, Joe Atkinson (Norman Burton); and Lyle Waggoner, originally Maj. Steve Trevor, is now Steve Trevor Jr., the son of the first-season character. CBS also revised Wonder Woman’s costume and added a slinky diving outfit to her couture. Still, Season 2’s story lines stick to the comic-book-inspired format, with the Amazon princess wielding her magic golden lasso and deflecting bad guys’ bullets with her bracelets. The Season 2 opener, "Return of Wonder Woman," finds Steve Trevor Jr. crashing his plane on Paradise Island -- just like Dad did in Season 1! The ageless Princess Diana opts to return with him to the outside world, disguised as Diana Prince, to protect the island's secrets from the curious. Fan favorites in this 22-episode set include: "The Pied Piper," wherein WW saves a young woman (The Brady Bunch's Eve Plumb) from an evil rock star (Martin Mull); "The Man Who Made Volcanoes," featuring Roddy McDowall as the titular geo-seismic terrorist; and "Mind Stealers from Outer Space," a camp classic that finds Wonder Woman joining forces with a friendly alien to prevent Earth’s destruction. In addition to appearances by Hollywood veterans such as Celeste Holm, Mel Ferrer, and Frank Gorshin, Season 2 also offers several before-they-were-stars moments. Keep an eye out for Ted Shackelford (pre-Knot’s Landing), Philip Michael Thomas (pre-Miami Vice), and Melanie Chartoff (pre-Rugrats).
