Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tony Nigro
Five thrillers from Alfred Hitchcock get the Criterion Collection's special treatment in this magnificent box set. Culled from the filmmaker's early career, these films already show the keen insight into psychology and film language that eventually earned Hitchcock the "Master of Suspense" title. The 39 Steps (1935), a prototypical "wrong man" thriller, finds Robert Donat enmeshed in a conspiracy that sends him racing across the Scottish moors. In The Lady Vanishes (1938), which could be called a "wrong woman" thriller, the disappearance of an old woman (Dame May Whitty) on a train puts another woman at the center of a fine mystery. Hitchcock's adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca (1940), also the director's first collaboration with producer David O. Selznick, won well-deserved Best Picture and Best Cinematography Academy Awards. The taut ghost story is pure Hitchcock suspense, through-and-through. (The film is presented here in a double-DVD set that features an unprecedented amount of bonus features.) Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman shine in Spellbound (1945), Hitchcock's thriller about identity and psychoanalysis that features an outstanding dream sequence designed by Salvador Dalí. Finally, in Notorious (1946), Hitchcock constructs a mystifying love triangle involving an American agent (Cary Grant), the spy under his employ (Bergman again), and the Nazi she is spying on (Claude Rains). Tremendous performances only make Ben Hecht's wonderful script that much more sublime, and the film rounds out this exceptional collection in the most perfect of ways. The DVDs all feature a wealth of extras, including audio commentaries by Hitch historians and much more.
