Overview

Emily Bronte's classic novel has been filmed many times over the years, most notably the 1939 version starring Laurence Olivier, Merle Oberon, and David Niven. Director Robert Fuest (the man who gave us the very grim, nasty, and fun Dr. Phibes films, as well as the satanic schlock-fest The Devil's Rain) tries his hand at adapting the tragic-romantic novel for the screen, and he dishes up plenty of mood, atmosphere, and some rather nice performances from his two leads. MGM Home Entertainment's disc may be slight in the extras department, but the disc is overall very nice. The film is offered in both its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (enhanced) or in a not-very-attractive pan-and-scan version. The letterboxed option is definitely the way to go for this film which is rich in atmosphere, period detail, and non-studio locations. The picture is sharp throughout, but there are plenty of speckles, scratches, and other print damage apparent. Ultimately, though, it's nothing to get too worried about. The disc has been given both English and French mono soundtracks, as well multiple subtitle options. Theatrical trailers for two other MGM DVD releases are also included.
