One of the most popular superhero teams in comic book history finally comes to the screen in this big-budget adaptation of the long-running Marvel Comics series. Psychic Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) leads a school of skilled mutants called X-Men, a peacekeeping force to safeguard the world against a race of genetically mutated humans known as Homo Sapiens Superior. However, Magneto (Ian McKellen), a mutant with a powerful magnetic charge, has also begun to organize a team to strike first against what he believes to be a threat from humanity. When he kidnaps Rogue (Anna Paquin) from the X-Men's compound, Xavier and his forces must rescue her, even as they continue to vie with Magneto for the fearsomely strong mutant battler Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Both Xavier and Magneto also have to contend with Senator Kelly (Bruce Davison), a heartless political leader who wants a final solution against mutants on both sides. Fighting for the forces of virtue with the X-Men are Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, Halle Berry as Storm, and James Marsden as Cyclops; Rebecca Romjin-Stamos as Mystique, Ray Park as the Toad, and Tyler Mane as Sabretooth are the minions of Magneto.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tony Nigro
From uncanny in the comics to action blockbuster at the box office, the mutant superhero group the X-Men serve their audience well in this live-action adaptation directed by Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects). Highly anticipated by fans for years -- the comics date back to the 1960s -- the film intelligently tackles the comics' common themes of racism, immigration, and identity, with the aid of a crackerjack ensemble cast. Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, James Marsden, and adorable Anna Paquin are regarded as outsiders both by humans and by their own mutant race. Chronicling the beginnings of professor Xavier's super-powered X-students (who flaunt super costumes to match), the battle focuses on sinister primary foe Magneto (Ian McKellen), with his mutant minions, played by Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and Ray Park (a.k.a. Darth Maul) at his side. A George Wallace-like senator (Bruce Davison) launching a campaign against mutantkind only complicates things for our heroes, but provides for some good character drama, a tactic that has always made the X-Men comics as super as they are. Singer's stylish direction handles the action well and with a bit less silliness than other recent comic-book adaptations, while X-Men creator and all-around comic legend Stan Lee cuts the mustard in a fine cameo as a hot-dog vendor. The X-ceptional 1.5 DVD features an Enhanced Viewing Mode, incorporating more than 60 extra minutes of behind-the -scenes footage and previously deleted material.
All Movie Guide - Karl Williams
Considered by comic book fans to be one of the better film adaptations to spring from the pulp genre, X-Men is an exciting, well-crafted action picture that shuttles the career of director Bryan Singer from the world of low-budget, independent filmmaking into the mainstream studio fold. The film's Achilles heel is its complicated juggling act of multiple characters and plot lines, but Singer must be forgiven for squeezing a story that has unfolded over 30 years into a two-hour time frame. For the most part he succeeds admirably, maintaining an obvious affection and regard for his tale's comic book roots and making the essential artistic choice of taking it all seriously (as the series of sequels that followed Batman (1989) prove, a tongue-in-cheek approach can become quickly wearisome). Singer also scores on the casting front, with strong performances from several of his key players, most notably veterans Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. The cast standout, however, is Australian newcomer Hugh Jackman, who bites into his role of Wolverine with leonine aggression, preserving a sense of latent intelligence just under the surface of his broiling, testosterone-fueled anger. X-Men will make Jackman a star, and with a healthy box-office tally, it's a safe bet that 20th Century Fox will be making a sequel.

This movie was the beginning of an incredible series, with numerous sequels and prequels. The plot is good. Magneto had created a device that would turn any regular human into a mutant. He wanted to turn the World Leaders into Mutants, so the goals/needs of Mutants would be the same as the theirs. Unfortunately the machine wasn't a success. The induced mutation was rejected, and the human body began to break down at the cellular level. The X-Men had to battle Magneto's minions, to keep Magneto from using his machine. Wolverine is a subplot to the main movie. He's a primal/elemental character. He's guided by instinct and has berserker fighting stile. Primarily a loner personality, but fiercely protective of anyone he cares about. This movie is when he first meets Rogue, Professor X, and the X-Men. Though he never agrees with their political views, he eventually/reluctantly fights by their side. The cast is spectacular. Patrick Stewart is the ideal choice for Charles Xavier. Ian McKellen portrayed Eric Lensherr flawlessly. Hugh Jackman brought Wolverine to life - He is Wolverine. Rebecca Romijn showed many aspects of Mystique. Halle Berry showed both Storm's power and beauty. Anna Paquin played Rogue, when she was just learning what it means to be a Mutant.

Everything is great about this movie. The producer and director team stays loyal to X-men fans out there by keeping accuracy with settings and characters right down to Storm's accent. They fit the characters looks, expressions, and personalities to the T with the ALL STAR cast in this production! The sets were perfect with many sophisticated and stylish touches. And the special effects definately deserve a FIVE STAR rating! A great action movie for the young and old!

I liked this great movie the first time I saw it, but it seems to get better with more viewing. This is an amazing thing, huge success that actually benefits from being watched closely, a summer blockbuster you can actually think about. Imagine, a comic book movie with genuinely great performances from every member of the cast. (Maybe with the exception of Bruce Davison's Senator Kelly, who's too articulate and intelligent to make a convincing U.S. senator.) I'm hoping there'll be a whole string of X-Men movies, especially if they're directed by Bryan Singer.

The X-Files was a pretty good comic book to movie adaptation. The special effects were amazing as expected and the plot was entertaining. Not the best, but not the worse. If you're bored and have absolutely nothing to watch, this is a good amusement.

One of the better adaptations of comics to big screen. Wonderful effects and good character developement. I especially enjoyed the banter between Scott and Logan.

This movie was way way way better than I ever expected. I just couldn't get enough. I think the cast was an excellent choice. Hugh Jackman brought alive the character of Wolverine, as did Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and Ian McKellen as Magneto. The plot was a great introduction to the whole x-men being and I'm just waiting for the second one to come out.

I thought that it wouldn't be very good because it's based on a comic book but my brother got me to watch it and it was excellant. My favorite parts were when Storm's eyes went white. Also it had great special effects!

I've always liked the comic book, and I was thrilled when I heard they were making it into a movie. And after I watched it I wasn't disapointed! In fact I LOVED IT! Rent it or better yet buy it so you can watch it when ever you want!

I really, really enjoyed this movie. It was a lot of fun and the DVD options are great (Hugh Jackman's screen test, deleted scenes). You really don't have to be a fan of the comic to enjoy it. Why? Because no one making the film (actors and director) knew the comic before they started making it.

I normally don't watch movies adapted from comics but, I have to say that this was an exciting film. It was put together very well. I liked the depth of the charactors. I wish I had seen it on the big screen. The effect were great.

I really liked how Bryan Singer portrays racism and prejudice in this movie. Bruce Davidson does a great job on a bigoted US senator who wants to punish all 'mutants' with forced registration(re:witchunts)My favorite character is Rogue. Will someone please tell me what happens to Rogue in the X men comic,'Rogue's tale, beauty and the beast.''Thanks

A simply amazing movie - state-of-the-art special effects help to truly represent each mutant's power. The cast is well-selected - Patrick Stewart is flawless as Prof. X, Ian McKellen is brilliant as Magneto, and of course, Hugh Jackman is nothing short of AMAZING as Wolverine - he rocks!
