This spectacular sequel to X-Men outdoes its predecessor in virtually every way, presenting viewers with a dizzying array of thrills while further developing previously established characters, introducing new ones, and setting the stage for an explosive conflict to come. Threatened in the first film with genocide, the mutants and their advocates -- unofficially led by Dr. Charles Xavier Patrick Stewart -- find their right to privacy threatened by the newly proposed Mutant Registration Act, which enemies like General William Stryker Brian Cox hope to use as a means of tracking and eventually eliminating them. The noble Xavier and his team of X-Men still labor against evil, while the sinister Magneto Ian McKellen -- although imprisoned -- remains bent on subjecting humanity to mutant control. It wouldn't be easy for any director to do justice to this film's multiplicity of characters, relationships, and subplots, but director Bryan Singer is growing into the challenge: He hurls the viewer headlong into the narrative, which zips along at breakneck speed and pauses only to introduce such new characters as Pyro Aaron Stanford and Iceman Shawn Ashmore, who falls for the beautiful but deadly Rogue Anna Paquin. Halle Berry, returning as the weather-controlling Storm, doesn't get as much footage as she probably deserves; nor does James Marsden as Cyclops or Rebecca Romijn-Stamos as Mystique. But Famke Janssen's Jean Grey is showcased and plays a pivotal role in the proceedings, while Alan Cumming has a showy supporting part as the Scripture-quoting Nightcrawler. Judged on the basis of eye-popping special effects and spectacular action sequences, X2 would be an eminently worthwhile sequel, but the emphasis on characterization and underlying plea for tolerance make it more than a typical popcorn movie. As comic-book movies go, this one is, well, X-cellent in every way.

X2 is one of those sequels that moviegoers dream of -- it's bigger, badder, and ten times more explosive than Bryan Singer's classy but hindered original. Aided by a much larger budget, and the comfort of the mythology already introduced, X2 goes for broke from the get-go and doesn't let up until the fantastic finale that'll leave die-hard fans sweating in their seats. That's not to say non-comic-book readers are left in the dust with this one -- essentially, that's the genius of this sequel...While building their own film universe with these beloved mutants, the filmmakers obviously have love and respect for the original 30-plus years of printed history -- in this flick alone, they tackle three key stories of the comic and somehow still make it all work for the non-readers out there. Thinking back, it's fitting that X-Men was so much of a setup because this is where the juice really gets cookin' and the payoff begins. First off, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) fans beware, because this is what you've been waiting for -- the berserker is officially unleashed, and audiences everywhere now have a new iconic movie hero because of it. Of course, it's not all Wolvie's story in this darker tale...Old faces are fresh again when plots blossom and characters are fleshed out in fantastic fashion as everyone, at some point, gets their time in the sun (besides Cyclops [James Marsden], who sadly disappears for one full hour during the film). Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan continue to be fabulous in their roles, giving instant credibility and creating flawless characterizations to these two tragic old friends. New to the scene is Alan Cumming in a surprising turn as the mysterious teleporter Nightcrawler. His makeup and teleporting effects are exceptional, while the accent he chose is flawless (unlike Academy Award-winner Halle Berry's in the original, which is gladly absent here). Of course, with a new sequel come new villains, and this one has them in spades. First off, there's Brian Cox -- one mammoth actor that gives birth to one of the nastiest bad guys in history, William Stryker, a scientist who holds the key to Wolverine's past. Also on hand is the gorgeous Kelly Hu as Lady Deathstrike, a siren who isn't on the screen long, but does take part in one of the most grueling knock-down, drag-out fights in X-Men history, automatically making her a classic villain that'll be remembered long after the credits roll. Speaking of action, if the theater had seat belts, you'd want to strap yourself in, because Singer and company have crafted a film that makes the first one pale in comparison. It's the tasty treat that fans and newcomers alike have been waiting for -- a meaty, action-packed, story-driven superhero film that delivers on the grandness and scale that the characters and this sequel deserved.

    Top 5 Best Comic Book Movie

    X-Men 2 felt like comic book movies should. Next to Iron Man 2, this has to be one of Marvel's best creations on the big screen. Too bad the 3rd installment flopped. Highly recommended buy for your collection here!

    X-men series

    I bought these for my man, thinking he'd enjoy them - turns out he has no interest in them. Thinking that I'd have no interest in them, especially when the hands got angry, I watched then and enjoyed them very much. I'm now waiting for the newest one to come out on DVD.

    Good movie.

    I saw this movie and thought it was really cool, nightcrawler was one of the best characters. Although not being my favorite in the trilogy I still give it thumbs up!

    Terrible

    One word. BAD!!. Don't waste your money. I rented it, and it was a drag to watch. If u are looking for a movie to buy and never saw this, take my word for it, and don't buy it.

    Xciting! Xzilertaing! Xerrific!

    This movie just flat out rocks. Despite a few differences, like one part wolverines hair parts to the right, and in the next scene it parts to the left. And in another scene Xavier walked. He cant walk, he's a parapalygic. And Nightcrawlers color of blue was off, it was too dark of blue. And wolverines claws are 15 inches in the comic, and in the movie it appeared they were only 13 inches long. I really hope brian Singer corrects these mistakes in X3. My mom didnt like it, and wouldnt let me watch it at first. But I have been collecting the comics for over 20 years. Keep it going X men!

    X2 - X-Men United

    This movie sucked! The first one at least had an easy to understand story, this one was really confusing. There is not much action and the fight scene that I was anticipating was so short! This movie is terrible.

    The best X-men movie so far

    This movie surpassed the first one. There are a lot of cool special effects, new characters, and the story line is very good. You should by this movie. By the way, pay attention to Wolverine

    magneto rocks

    the first x-men was ok but x2 was amazing wolverine kicked butt and so did nightcrawler, it had much better action then the first movie, i hope the 3rd one has more with colossus

    I missed this in theatres but everybody was saying the movie was great so I got the DVD and watched it and it was so boring! The plot was confusing, and Cyclops was barely in it. I think the first one was better.

    Better than average

    I've always loved X-Men. I was a big fan of the original cartoon series. When the first movie came out, I confess I was a bit disappointed. I didn't really expect X2 to be anything special. Boy, was I surprised! It was much better than I expected.

    Oh, yeah!!!!

    What an action movie! After some rather dissapointing or OK sequels, I'm proud to say this one is a whole lot better than the first, which is quite an achievement, seing as the first was quite a cool flick, also!

    Even better than the first one!

    This was an awesome movie with tons of action! All of the characters have wonderful talent in this movie. This movie also has an unexpected ending. I can't wait until X3.

    FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC!!!!

    wow this movie was soo good! I am a huge X-men fan, always have been, and let me tell you, this movie does not disappoint! Never a dull moment! I think it is better then the first, but they were both soo good, i cant tell!

    X ellent

    Better than the first!

    You really don't have to try very hard to make a sequel to X-Men better than the first one. The first one was too short to develop very much character depth and there was too much plot to develop much action. It was merely an introduction to what was to come later in the film series. In this film, we learn more about the characters and learn more about what is to come much later in the X-Men story. However, like the first film, action is a minor thing compared to developing storyline. Somethings however, like the storyline, are never fully explained. Another problem of mine is the fact that Gambit is still not featured in this film. And some characters in the story are severly cut down. Cyclops and Professor X's running time are severly cut compared to the first film. Cyclops only makes a few brief appearances in the film. Part of this is for the new characters that come--Nightcrawler, Lady Deathstrike, Pyro, Iceman, and General Stryker. If yous look closely, you can see Hank McCoy (future Beast) on a T.V set in a political debate in one scene.Toad and Sabretooth are a complete mystery. Their fate is a question since they don't appear in this film. The acting is so much better in this film than the previous and there are no stupid lines spoken. We can actually care about the characters because we know more about them in this film. If you liked the first one, you will definitely love this sequel.
