If any movie was made for DVD, XXX, a video game disguised as a film, is the one. And what a DVD! Though it could easily have been a two-disc set, Columbia Pictures opted for a single platter, but loaded it up. To begin with is an exceptional 40-minute documentary called "A Filmmaker's Diary," covering everything from pre- to post-production. Beyond this are three more featurettes on the vehicles, Vin Diesel, and the world of XXX. The final featurette is a pathetic promotional piece for Pontiac's GTO. This is nothing more than a commercial for their upcoming car and has little to do with the movie. Along with that is a brief section on some visual effects for the avalanche scene. The shots are silent so the optional commentary by Joel Hynek of Digital Domain is almost necessary. In addition are ten deleted scenes with optional director's commentary, a music video from Gavin Rossdale for "Adrenaline," some filmographies, and the theatrical trailer for this film, plus trailers for Anger Management and Darkness Falls. If that wasn't enough, director Rob Cohen provides a scene-specific commentary that is really interesting and never dull. While the supplements are outstanding, the image and sound equal them in every way. Possibly even better than the image is the sound. The 5.1 Dolby Digital track (a DTS would have equally rocked, but isn't offered) is loud, loud, and loud. Dialogue is surprising not obscured, but this track is alive throughout the film. Surrounds are aggressive and used at just the right moments for wonderful effect. Finally, the image is framed at 2.35:1 and, of course, anamorphic. A pan and scan version is available separately, but with this type of film, any cut in picture size would ruin the effect. It's reference quality all the way. Detail is solid, and the darker scenes show no sign of breakdown. Would anything less be expected anymore? Certainly not. Colors are equally strong, with a subdued saturation that mimics the theatrical print perfectly. The critics tended to hate this film, but if you want action, and you want an exceptional DVD to go along with it, go no further than XXX.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Move over, Bond, there’s a new spy in town, and he’s not worried about qualifying for a license to kill. Vin Diesel, the new millennium’s most unlikely leading man, plays the new millennium’s most unlikely secret agent in XXX, a lightning-paced, action-packed thriller with more stunts and explosions per reel than any movie we’ve seen in a long time. Diesel is Xander Cage, an extreme-sports daredevil forcibly recruited by government operative Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) to infiltrate a terrorist band operating in Prague. Cage’s assignment: to find and destroy the deadly new nerve gas being developed by scientists working for the ruthless Yorgi (Marton Csokas), a former Soviet soldier who plans to throw the entire world into chaos. Sultry Asia Argento sizzles as Yelena, a sweetheart of Yorgi’s with schemes of her own. Diesel’s rough-edged, downright thuggish charm makes him well suited for the starring role. Cage is an act-first, think-later kind of guy with no use for rules and no respect for authority -- in other words, just the agent you want inside a group of self-described nihilists. Rob Cohen, who directed Diesel in The Fast and the Furious, satisfies action lovers by keeping his brawny star in almost constant motion, rewarding Diesel fans with frequent glimpses of Xander sans shirt. The elaborate and inventive action sequences -- almost too numerous to count -- supply an adrenaline-fueled rush that’ll grab you in the first reel and hold you until the final credits roll. If you like your spy movies with complicated story lines, surprising plot twists, and witty repartee, XXX is unlikely to satisfy you. If, however, you prefer nonstop stunts and thrills of the most visceral kind, this is definitely the film to have. For the Special Edition DVD versions (wide-screen and full-frame), Cohen supplies commentary both during the film and for a number of deleted scenes; Special Edition discs also offer a music video and a behind-the-scenes featurette, "Building Speed: The Vehicles of XXX."
All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
Rob Cohen's XXX seems to be inspired by video games. Loud electronic European techno music (including a hilarious cover of the famous score from The Third Man) accompanies Xander Cane, played with great tough-guy panache by Vin Diesel, as he shoots guns, out-snowboards an avalanche, brings down a drug cartel, drives real real fast, beds Asia Argento, and blows stuff up. Borrowing the plot points familiar to anyone who has ever seen a James Bond film, XXX certainly finds an energy that has been missing from those films. What sets this film apart from other films obviously aimed at the international action market is the lead actor. Diesel is a compelling figure. He appears to genuinely enjoy himself on screen without resorting to self-mockery that would pull the audience out of the movie. Like the most memorable Bond actors, he wants the audience to have as good a time watching the movie as he did making it. On that level the film is a success. There may not be anything original about XXX, but it is an energetic addition to a familiar genre.

Good story of Joe Blow turns James Bond. Joe Blow gets sent on a ''mission'', aquires lots of fun toys (explosives, weapons, vehicles), tries to get the girl. Lots of action and great stunts throughout the whole movie. Need a big screen tv for this one! The kind of movie you can watch a hundred times. Don't miss it!

If you're looking for a movie FULL of action, then this is the movie you need to see. Don't watch this expecting to see oscar caliber performances though. This is a straight up, action packed, edge of your seat, sexy movie, and I loved every minute of it.

This movie was extremely action packed, clearly a James Bond rip off, but still a good one. I think that it was almost better than any of the James Bond movies just because it doesn't have that reputation to live up too.

This is a crude james-bond wanabee with a predictable plot, and insipid stunts, after creating Spiderman and adaptation, Columbia pictures failed with this worthless movie

Although not as good as a 007 movie (my personal opinion) I thought this movie had an undeniable charm to it. Vin Diesel brilliantly portrayed an ex-convict turned spy (Xander Cage), and Asia Argento played a sultry, yet intelligent ''Yelena.'' Overall it was very well cast and an enjoyable movie. not recommended for children under the age of 13 (as displayed by the rating) due to mild sexual themes, and some graphic violence. I definitely recommend this movie for people who have enjoyed previous Vin Diesel, or James Bond movies.

Ok I admit it. The stunts were good. But, what did they have to do with the plot? How can you parachute off a 'Vette and not get arrested ahead of time? Why would the government even THINK of hiring someone like that. Out of everything that I didn't understand with this movie, one stunt sticks out. When xXx is chased by a heliocopter and he's on a bike, how does he jump a 10 foot fence...WITH NO JUMP? He just flies over the fence, between the barbed wire. If you see the movie, write a review. Tell me where you found the plot in the jumble of stunts.

Don't go into this movie thinking it will have a great plot or characters. It delivers everything it says it will: Great Action. The actions sequences are great and Vin Diesel is a great action hero. Sit back, relax and enjoy. If you try to think during the movie, don't.

This movie had excellent action scenes in it. It took me far, far away from the realms of reality & made me feel full of energy! Not to mention, ol' Vin is mighty easy on the eyes! This is definately one to have in the home library. What a man!!!

I wasn¿t really a big fan of this movie. The trailers and the previews made the movie look amazing, but when I saw it the theatres I was very disappointed in what I saw. First the story of the movie took to a little long to get to the point, also the movie was way to long and it seemed as if it was never going to end. I was praying for the credits to pop up somewhere. The acting was a little weak most of the actors used the same emotion through the whole entire film. The only good thing in the film was seeing Vin Diesal¿s body and having only two well known actors such as Samual L. Jackson. All I can say is that I was very disappointed at what I saw, I expected a lot more from this film. I had to watch this movie at least three times to enjoy it a little bit. To me I do not think this film is worth buying unless you¿re a real Vin Diesal fan, then go ahead, but I don¿t recommend this film for anyone to own.
