During a wedding, they meet Luisa Maribel Verdú -- the 28-year-old wife of Tenoch's scholarly cousin -- and try to convince her to go on a road trip to Heaven's Mouth, a made-up beach paradise the two claim is on the Oaxacan coast. To their surprise, Luisa -- who is looking to escape her troubled life for a spell -- agrees to go along. Two days into the trip, tension starts to build between the two friends: Luisa has had sex with each, and now both lads are not-so-quietly vying for her affection. Soon simmering jealousies boil over into savage arguments, threatening to completely destroy their friendship. Adolescent libidos fuel an unusual ménage à trois in Y Tu Mamá También, an erotic and sophisticated comedy-drama from Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón. The story is simple -- two privileged, sex-obsessed teens Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna take an older woman Maribel Verdú on an outing to a beach -- and plays out on one level like a teen-male fantasy. But there's more here than meets the eye, as the film's buoyant tone is repeatedly mitigated by an omniscient narrator. In the style of Jean-Luc Godard, this commentary uncovers hidden motivations and places the characters and events in a broader and often unsetting context. Meanwhile, the story unfolds as a road trip of sexual initiation, including some powerful personal revelations and homoerotic tensions that threaten to destroy the boys' friendship. The actors succeed with some truly challenging material here, handling graphic dialogue and physical intimacy with a grace that is at once sexy and vulnerable. Make no mistake: Y Tu Mamá También candidly explores its subject with a healthy and stimulating sense of humor and fantasy. But there's a dangerous undertow as well, resulting in a truly striking film of uncommon power.

Y Tu Mamá También has been casually referred to as a Spanish-language American Pie, perhaps because both films include footage of taboo body fluids floating in liquids they don't usually call home -- a swimming pool here, a beer there. But that comparison doesn't nearly do justice to Alfonso Cuarón's bold, sexually explicit yet artistically justified coming-of-age piece, which climbs outside the box at every turn. More generous films to associate it with are Run Lola Run and Amélie; both share Mamá's curiosity about the interrelationship of seemingly unlike people and places, and contemplate the pasts and futures of bit players in a manner that seems essential, not superfluous. Yet it's not as glossy as those films, either. Mamá retains a documentary-style realism that's less dependant on set pieces, preferring the messy yet basically benign continuum of life. Mamá's illuminating narration is never intrusive, even though it cuts off the soundtrack in a way that sounds like abrupt speaker failure; it contextualizes the action while leaving the deeper profundities to the viewer's own thoughts. Cuarón's fascinating decisions are as regular as the free-flowing bull sessions so naturally performed by lead actors Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal in and around Mexico City, and on their road trip to self-discovery. Cuarón, seeming more comfortable in his element than in a Hollywood release like the Gwyneth Paltrow vehicle Great Expectations, challenges the actors' talents in a handful of takes that last minutes on end, many of which include the camera moving seamlessly through the environment. Even with all these accomplishments, it's still as funny and as titillating as anything out there -- maybe because it doesn't have to try so hard to do either.

    I Love This Movie!

    WOW!!!!

    I saw this little jewel of a movie on the Independent Film Channel. I didn't know what to think with the title,( my Spanish is severly limited), but quickly got into the film and was highly impressed with the acting, script, story, all of it. I intend to add this one to my collection.

    I loved it...

    I thought it was great. The story, the acting, Diego. All of it. Not just because I have a crush on Diego, it was a really good movie. But, I would like to say, that I do have a big crush on Diego.

    'Mamacita' what a film

    this is one of the most touching and honest films I've ever seen. the characters are heartbreakingly human and the plot is true to life. highly recommended to any independent film fan.

    beautiful and oh so blunt

    OK I have to admit I had to buy this movie after reading such rave reviews in magazines, and boy am I glad I bought it. This movie is so honest and blunt that it feels like when your watching each scene that you are there invading someones moment in life, the lines , the actors, the narration was done superbly, I love it and I will watch it again and again. I recommend to get the unrated version of the dvd because you can get a taste of what the actors and directors really are like and also see another hilarious and sex filled lil movie of older people in mexico , I just have to say it again, I love that I bought this movie, GREAT ACTORS !

    A breath of fresh air......

    Had no prior idea as to what this film was about.Was i pleasantly surprised. Acting was first class and the mix of humour, passion and darkness was crafted and directed to perfection.Just quite superb and such a refreshing change to feel so uplifted and inspired at the cinema.

    Great story with great actors

    This was one of the best movies that i have seen in a while i have told everyone of my friends to watch this movie. The story is a story of two friends and how certain circumstance can change all that. This is a must see. Even if you dont buy this movie right away go rent it and then i asure you that will want to add this DVD to your ever growing collection of great movies

    not just your regular frat boy flick!

    After all the sex jokes have ceased. This movie continues to be moving powerhouse. It deals with friendship and love in an honest way, instead of reaching the untainable goal of getting a cheerleader. The characters in the flim you actually begin to care about and their well being. This movie also brings to light the social and economic problems of Mexico with it being too preachy. In all this movie should be seen as a lesson of life and how we think it will turn one way but it becomes another. enjoy!

    Crude Awakening

    Mexican movie, dealing heavily with sexuality, politics, economic classes and even religion in the Mexican community. It shows very accurately how things work in Mexico. People can relate to the story one way or another. It is fearless to show how crude life really is.
