Dvorák: The Complete Published Orchestral Works

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Here, on 17 discs, is some of the most delightful orchestral music in the repertory -- more than 19 hours of it, in fact. Many folks will already have a recording of the "New World" Symphony on their CD shelf, of course, and perhaps some of the Slavonic Dances and the Cello Concerto, too. But the thing about Dvorák is that, while his most popular works are very popular, there's a stack of other pieces that are virtually never heard outside of the Czech Republic.
Leave it to Naxos to come to the rescue with this box set brimming with all of his orchestral music, another entry in the label's White Box series. The underrated early symphonies are full of felicities, for example, and the Slavonic Rhapsodies are more expansive counterparts to their dancing cousins -- not to mention the gorgeously lush Rhapsody, Op 14. Listening to the delectably tuneful "Czech" Suite or the even less familiar Suite in A, one is simply stunned at how, even today, there's still so much top-notch Dvorák consigned to the fringes of the repertory. Certainly there's no earthly reason why the extraordinarily vivid late tone poems -- with their occasional Mahlerian grotesqueries -- aren't played regularly by orchestras the world over. And for those who look warily upon such bargain boxes, there's no need to worry: Naxos has done Dvorák proud. One might want to supplement this box with some classic recordings of the favorites, but even if you're starting from scratch, this collection will not disappoint. In fact, every single one of these performances has something to offer, and most important, they're all imbued with a sense of relish and discovery that make listening a joy.
