Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Billed as a goodnight lift-the-flap bedtime board book, readers are greeted by an owl. Its normal cry of Whoo! Whoo! is used to frame the questions, the first one being "Who will sleep behind the tree?" Lift the shaped and nearly page-size flap and discover that it is a moose. From the tree, it is on to the pond where frogs are sleeping on lily pads, and nearby among the cattails the flap reveals ducks and geese settling down for the night. The forest is home to bear and deer and with the moon and stars in the sky, they too seem ready to go to bed. The final spread presents a rising sun, so it is now morning. All of the previously encountered animals are awake, but owl is getting ready for his goodnight and sleep. A delightful board book that presents habitats and introduces the concept of nocturnal and diurnal animals with ease. The stylized illustrations keep the images simple; all the animals and other elements are easily recognizable. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

PreS—In this engaging pair of lift-the-flap books, Toucan greets a number of rainforest animals in the morning and Owl bids various woodland creatures goodnight. Both visually appealing books feature very basic layouts and graphic-style illustrations that resemble Colorforms, which allow youngsters to focus on the guessing game in each book. For example, on a verso, Owl says, "Whooo! Whooo! Who will sleep behind the tree?" A foldout image of some trees on the recto reveals a moose. Toucan concludes with a heartwarming scene showing the bird returning to her nest to greet her own babies with a delicious berry breakfast as the other animals look on. The second title ends at dawn with Owl finally ready to sleep just as his neighbors wake. Two colorful introductions.—Cathie Bashaw Morton, Millbrook Central School District, NY

    Very highly recommended

The book is a sheer delight. My 15 month old granddaughter never gets tired of the whimsical illustrations and the flaps are a perfect size for her little hands
