Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Many younger boys are not reading on grade level, and a book like this one in the "NBA" series can help. Dwight Howard is a real super star. He plays for the Orlando Magic and made it to the finals in 2009. He is from Atlanta Georgia where his father was a Georgia state trooper and his mother a teacher. At an early age he showed great promise as a basketball player, and he even wrote a list of his life goals. One of them was to become first selection in the NBA draft. Since he kept growing, Dwight had to change from playing guard to center. His parents made sure that his high school basketball success did not go to his head. He decided after his final year in high school to play in the NBA. His dream came true in 2004 when he became the first pick by the Orlando Magic. He had to get ready to play professional ball, which meant many hours of practice. It paid off as "he became the first rookie since Shaquille O'Neal to record 10 or more rebounds in each of his first nine NBA games." In 2008, Dwight won the NBA slam dunk contest. He had great mentors in his teammates. He played in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, and that same year he was determined to improve and help his team win the playoffs. It was not to be that year, but they came very close and there is still much more to come from this young basketball star. The story of his career is liberally illustrated with full-color photographs. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
