Overview

The Caterer

Meet Goldy Bear: a bright, opinionated, wildly inventive caterer whose  personal life has become a recipe for disaster. She's got  an abusive ex-husband who's into making tasteless threats, a rash of mounting bills that are taking a huge bite out of her budget, and two enticing  men knocking on her door.

The Dish

Now determined to take control of her life, Goldy  moves her business and her son to ritzy Aspen  Meadow Country Club, where she accepts a job as a  live-in cook. But just as she's beginning to think  she's got it made—catering decadent dinners and  posh society picnics and enjoying the favors of  Philip Miller, a handsome local shrink, and Tom Shulz,  her more-than-friendly neighborhood cop—the  dishy doctor inexplicably drives his  BMW into an oncoming bus.

The Unsavory  Killer

Convinced that Philip's bizarre  death was no accident, Goldy decides to do a little  investigating of her own. But sifting through the  unpalatable secrets of the dead doc's life will  toss her into a case seasoned with unexpected danger  and even more unexpected revelations—the kind that could get a caterer and the son she loves. . .killed.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this perky mystery complete with toothsome hi-cal recipes, Davidson ( Catering to Nobody ) brings back Goldy Bear, the cherubic culinary sleuth with Shirley Temple curls. Fleeing her abusive ex-spouse, a physician she dubs ``The Jerk,'' Goldy and her teenage son Arch find a snug third-floor refuge in the Aspen Meadow, Colo., mansion of quirky Gen. Bo Farquhar, a retired munitions and terrorist pro who breezily detonates bombs while gardening and bird-watching. As the general's live-in gourmet cook, Goldly still has time to run Goldilocks' Catering and juggle two suitors--attractive psychiatrist Philip Miller and comfortably chubby cop Tom Schultz. Philip's shocking death--he careens off a cliff in a BMW after munching her brunch--casts suspicion on Goldy. Which of her foes might want to frame her? And who is the critic writing vicious reviews of her cooking in the Mountain Journal ? The plot spins along in good-humored fashion, while Goldy continues to whip up goodies for events like a disastrous ``aphrodisiac dinner'' for eight and a barbecue at which her luscious dessert smashes on the floor. When Arch vanishes, Goldly panics, but the author makes sure that all enigmas wind up in solutions that will surprise and please. (Aug.)

    A reviewer

The first book I read by Diane Mott Davidson was Dying for Chocolate, I'm an avid chocoholic. Goldy Bear or should I say Goldy Schultz now, is superb. Her taste for a good mystery makes your stomach rumble for more. I just love how Davidson has at the end of her novels the receipes that Goldy uses. I give Davidson 2 forks up for 'food for thought'. I need to read Sweet Revenge because I have such a sweet tooth for mystery!!

    Edible? Yes. Delicious? No.

I was attracted by the title, it sounded intriguing. But I did not enjoy it at all. First of all, I did not find the main character, Goldy the Caterer, a likable personality. She was nowhere close to perky, she was often quite rude, including to her customers, which is a bit odd, since she is living in a very small town and her welfare may very well depend on it. It is understandable that she is overworked because she is a single mother trying to make ends meet after divorcing an abusive husband, so she got my pity and compassion, but not an affection. Second, I found it odd that the writer is brand name dropping few times on every page. After a while it becomes really irritating. If I wanted to look through a catalogue, I would have done so instead of picking up a mystery. And third, though it is to be expected to find a lot of cooking and recipe descriptions in a book about a caterer, I felt that the mystery element of the story was a bit overwhelmed by those instead of being embellished and enriched. It seems to me that this book was trying to be a cookbook, a catalogue of affluent living assessories and a mystery at the same time. I felt it did not do well at all of the above. Although I do realise that there is an audience which enjoys recipes together with their mysteries, there are some better concoctions of this kind on the market, like Genia Potter series by Nancy Pickard. I do not feel compelled to read any other books by Diane Mott Davidson.

I loved this book! I am not usually a fan of murder mysteries, but Davidson sucks you in from the start and promises a good thrilling ride to the end. You never see the twists coming and you root for Goldy to prevail over everything and everybody. Excellent author, excellent story. I will be reading everything that Davidson has to offer.

Very enjoyable series of mysteries, the main characters stay the same. Similar to Janet Evanovich and the Stephanie Plum series.

One of the best series out there.

I actually got this book during a flight on Northwest Airlines and have been hooked ever since. The way that there is a mix of mystery and cooking is so appealing to someone who loves to bake. I have tried some of the recipies and have gotten wonderful feedback on them. I recommend this to anyone who loves to cook/bake and read murder mysteries.

Deceit and lies. The perfect recipe for murder.

Meet Goldy Bear. Caterer, ex-wife, mother. Goldy Bear owner of 'Goldilocks' Catering is finally moving forward. She has taken a summer job in a fancy suburb, cooking for a wealthy husband and wife. This is a dream come true. Goldy desperately needs the money and she is hoping to finally be free of her ex-husband who has managed, even after divorce, to continue his terrifying abuse. Now that Goldy is safely ensconced in the Farquhars' home all she has to do is convince her young budding magician son Archie that living in someone else's home and summer school with rich kids can be fun. While Goldy juggles dinners and brunches for sixty she still makes time for her two attentive suitors and enjoys her son. But Goldy is not prepared to have her catered affairs ridiculed in the town paper, or have someone threaten to sue her because of the name of her catering business. And she certainly is not prepared for the murder of Dr. Phillip Miller one of the men she is dating. As she tries to unravel the mystery of Phillip's death, her other friend policeman Tom Schulz is on the case as well. Goldy is led through a maze of complex and sometimes colorful characters. Danger comes to her and her son as secrets are uncovered /and unlikely suspects want her dead. I throughly enjoyed reading DYING FOR CHOCOLATE. The bonus is that recipes look absolutely delicious. It was an engaging mystery with real 'food for thought.' Kudos to Diane Mott Davidson for writting such a delicious mystery. Vannie(~.~)

    SWEET SUCCESS

THIS BOOK IS A VERY ENJOYABLE READ. I GOT HOOKED INSTANTLY. THE RECIPES INCLUDED IN THE BOOK MAKE FOR A NICE BONUS FOR AN ALREADY APPEALING STORY. I CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE AUTHOR'S OTHER CULINARY MYSTERIES. IF YOU WEREN'T ALREADY A CHOCOLATE LOVER, YOU WILL BE BEFORE THE BOOK IS DONE.
